Why do you say that the odds of winning the lottery are 14 million to one? Could it be that you just took someone's word for it? You have done exactly what you accuse others of: accepting what the "authorities" say. I seriously doubt you have done the mathematics.
With a name like "mathsman" you've really let yourself down with your first post.

There are 49 balls in the UK national lottery. You need to pick 6. They need to be the 6 that are drawn from machine.

For the first ball you have 49 balls but 6 chances one of your choices will be pulled. 49/6. For the next there are 48 balls left but you only have 5 so the odds of that ball are 48/5 and so on for 6 balls.

(49/6) * (48/5) * (47/4) * (46/3) * (45/2) * (44/1) = 13,983,816 to 1 or ~ 14 million to 1

If you doubt my maths, use an on-line calculator like this one to double check.
I think my Yr 8 maths teacher introduced probability to us this way using lottery as an example, and pretty much in the same fashion as Thork. I really couldn't be bothered checking the maths on it though.

I'm not sure if this can really be called a win because Thork didn't mention which lottery he was referring to before mathsman asked.

No, you're just wrong.  One way or the other mathsman assumed that Thork was as dumb as he was and really didn't understand lottery odds, and got thoroughly owned.

Not necessarily.  The odds of a single ticket hitting the Powerball jackpot is 1 in 175 million.  If you're used to looking at those kind of odds, then 1 in 14 million can seem unusually favorable.  It all depends on the parameters of the lottery.

So what reason did mathsman have to assume that Thork was talking about the Powerball, or some other such lottery?  There are plenty of single state lottery jackpots with much more favorable odds than that.  Any way you look at it Thork owned him.

Powerball what? No, the lottery.

I stand corrected. Well done.
Even mathsman was gracious enough to admit that I was correct.

Any way you look at it Thork owned him.
As for owning mathsman, well that's not really true. He was actually correct. I didn't remember the odds because of my calculations. I remembered because its fairly common knowledge. Its supposedly the same odds as being run over by a bus in the UK in any given week. Most people hope they will win the lottery. Not many hope to be hit be a bus, but its just as likely. Anyway I must have calculated the odds a few times before. I had to write a probability game based on random number generation in my first year of uni and needed to know the odds then. But in this case I just did them again on the fly.

Exactly my point.  How was mathsman supposed to know which lottery Thork was talking about?

I never said that you weren't correct.  I just don't think that it was an FTW worthy win is all.

When I was a virgin (it was back in the 20th century some time) I was concerned and worried about being a virgin. I thought about it a lot and desperately wanted to not be a virgin. However after fooling my first victim into giving me free sex, I suddenly stopped worrying about being a virgin. So being a non-virgin is not a lot like being a virgin. Being a non-virgin is an important step in life to making you stop hating everything and everyone. Please select any of the angry noobs as a case study. They are not angry about earth's shape. They are furious about being virgins. Being unable to do anything about being virgins, they come here instead and pretend to be astronauts or ice-wall guards or MiG-pilots or anyone else who fits into a group that is unlikely to be a virgin. Virgins lie about being virgins. Virgins despise themselves for being virgins. Virgins are furious that they are still virgins. Being a virgin is nothing like being a non-virgin. Being a virgin sucks.

It means that the observer is looking down at the curved edges of the sun's light upon the earth.

Thank you for repeating yourself and not elaborating at all when I made it perfectly clear I didn't understand.  I can now see why everyone hails you as FE saviour.

No, really, I'm still not totally sure what you're saying.  You could at least try and help, as I'm pretty sure you know what you're saying.

Oh the noob I was. Also, this thread gets less funny as you read back. I'm glad you all got funnier. ;D

Skyrim players run around killing dragons "just because they're dragons." Do you give any of them a chance? Nope. Hell, most players would have killed Paarthurnax if he wasn't labeled as an essential.

The dragon was acting suspiciously in the vicinity of Whiterun. I called the guards and told them about it, and then approached the Dragon (though they asked me not to) in order to see what it was up doing. The dragon then attacked me, at which point I drew my concealed-carry bow, and killed it in self-defence.

There was an investigation, and the Jarl's steward decided there was not enough evidence to warrant prosecution. I am not a racist.
