someone needs a toxicology exam...
« on: September 13, 2008, 09:11:52 AM »
Unless this is a joke, well if it is, than bravo :D , and if its not, then explain me this. lol... I'm going to be a REAL WORLD, WHERE THE EARTH IS ROUND, pilot, but I've already got a fair knowledge about aviation. Here's a few questions for ya flatters... #1 on a flight, say, London to new york, the plane flys at higher latitudes, as we all know, or at least the people who haven't drank, as the earth is round, the distance betwen two points is smaller on a higher latitude than flying over the equator. Actually, some planes, depending on weight and other operational restrictions, can't fly from new york to london if they didn't when on that particular latitude. How do you explain this? #2 How do planes fly from sydney to los angeles all the way over the ocean, and still land whith fuel? #3 how do you explain the Singapore-new york route, that goes right over the north pole, or near to it? #3 what about that anual flight operated by qantas IIRC over the south pole? #4 if the earth is flat, why can't I see my destination airport shortly after reaching cruise?

uhhm.....

Yes, because that explains everything. Clearly you don't have any answers so I think we can safely say this is going to be a win for RE.

Really?  Why don't you fail less, and tell me exactly how that map does not answer every question in that specific post.

So how come the north pole is not visible from the Singapore-New York flight?

How does that explain the annual Qantas flight over the south pole?

And how come he cannot see his destination airport shortly after reaching cruise? Let me guess, bendy lights again right?

1. It is.

2. Quantas goes around the rim

3. Air density.

All evidence (except the last one) by that map.

Fail less noober.

And Qantas flights go around the rim without ever running out of fuel right?

There are high speed jet streams at altitude near the edge. It is possible to circumnavigate the ice wall in less than an hour.

So if they're near the edge then how come nobody on the flights comments about seeing the edge of the earth or guard towers or whatever? Governments get to them too do they?

Exactly ;)

Another one, Why is the outter rim or whatever you guys call it and the north pole colder than the sahara desert?

No, they don't usually fly right up close to the edge. They'll usually ride the edge of the jet stream, where it is slower but less turbulent.

Another one, Why is the outter rim or whatever you guys call it and the north pole colder than the sahara desert?

Same reason as in RET.

Sorry pal, aircraft have speed limits ;)

Airspeed or ground speed?

What does the jetstream have to do with airspeed?  Dude, you need some serious aviation education.

So then why would a fast enough jet stream not allow one to circumnavigate the ice wall in under an hour?

Uhm... apart that airspeed is the amount of air flowing around the aircraft, NOTHING! also, ever heard of microbursts and planes? That's what a gust can do to a plane.

@osama it would, but the plane would either have it's wings ripped of, or would just stall if the such a jetstream came from his 6 o'clock.

Microbursts are usually down drafts.  Try again.

If an airplane is traveling at 35,000 ft with an Indicated Airspeed 240 kts with a tail wind of 170 kts whats his True Air Speed?  Now be careful and answer this question correctly.

depends of it's altitude and the aircraft in question, but a regular medium range airliner flying at 35000 feet can only go up to somewhere around 290, 300 knots before it's wings fly off

If the wind is blowing from his precise 6 o'clock, 70 knots. OH NOOOOOO!!!!! COMMERCIAL PLANES WITHOUT  FLAPS EXTENDED STALL AROUND 160 KNOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! woopsy ;D

EDIT: Just noticed a few things there, you're right, wrong answer here

I am a weatherman... jet streams rarely go over 250 kts. When they do it occurs in an area about 200-500 miles long about  100-200 miles wide. The Jet max itself does not travel 250 kts relative to earth but the winds with in it are. The jet max (NH) travels about 20 - 60 MPH from W to E.

With Wardogg also in the thread ask him if he would travel inside of a jet max where wind go from 50 kts to 250 kts in 1000-2000 ft.

Example:

FL 300 winds => 30025 (Format: ###$$ =>   ### = Direction / $$ = Speed in kts)
FL 330 winds => 320250

That's some horrible sheer.

I haven't had to do a 175-1 in about a year... but I would say that's some severe Turb. Wardogg might still fly in it with his C130.

Last but not least here is a whole thread i created about the stupid Jet stream surfing theory that doesn't work:

This is great in a post Osama says he doesn't know enough to talk about jet streams but here he is posting his theories which he doesn't know anything about.

Above is the post he just recently made.

Below is the old post. Good stuff... if i didn't know better i would say you were Tom Bishop.

I would respond if I had any education in the field of meteorology. Being relatively ignorant of it, however, I think it better to await the response of someone who does know more about what they are talking about.

Sorry i ran in to this i had to bring it up.

His not knowing everything (or even most things) about meteorology does not mean he cannot postulate.

At least he simply came straight out and said he didn't know. Should we go through your post history and list off all the instances where you spoke about things you didn't understand, but ploughed ahead nonetheless?

Hell no.  My center wing box is about 40 years old.  I don't want my wings snapping off.

The problem was that guy has no idea how things inside an airplane work.  I was mocking his stupidity.

Well, do you know how to work with an FMGC? Do you even know what that is? Do you know what is the typical take off configuration of an A320? Do you know what a CATIII approach is? do you know what a NAT is? Do you know what's the impact of packs on take off? Do you know what's the true effect of the different settings of the autobrake on landing? do you know what a squak 7600 means? do you know which should you give priority, the TCAS or ATC? do you know where the Vref value usually is on an A320? do you know what to do to relight an engine on the air?
