Satellites orbit in longitudinal orbits. North to south and back up again.

And if you're curious, you can research a tv show (I think it was made in the UK) where they did just that; they tricked a group of young adults into thinking they were going through space camp, training, and finally blasting off into space to orbit the earth.
The entire experience of space flight, however, was faked.
I think so, satllites used in longitudinal orbits are used for ground surveilance. You see as they orbit the earth, the earth rotates and so the satellite can scan the earths surface in about a week, maybe faster.
I think it's called a geo-stationary orbit.
Also, I saw that show. the people they had on it were idiots. If they had anyone with the slghtest bit of intelligence they would have realised it was faked.
