The Sun and It's Movement
« on: August 30, 2008, 10:45:09 AM »
Hello, first time poster. I want to raise an issue with your FAQ. Under the sunrises sunset bit it says, and I quote:

Quote
It's a perspective effect.  Really, the sun is just getting farther away; it looks like it disappears because everything gets smaller and eventually disappears as it gets farther away.

However, the Sun does not get smaller/bigger when it set/rises. It appears to go up and down. It does not change size or shape, and I would please like someone to explain this "phenomenon".

As you can clearly see, the light actually comes from the wizard's wand.

Sorry your thread was derailed by lolz.  In answer to your question, the size of the sun is distorted by glare as it moves across the sky.

hehe, no probs with the lolz.

But back to the matter at hand. You say the light gets distorted. Fair answer. However, you said it shrinks away, so surely the amount of light reaching the earth would also reduce, thus the light being distorted would still show the sun getting smaller.

It is confusing, and a simpleton like me needs clarification 1 step at a time :)

So if you wouldn't mind, I would like to fill in the gaps. The more I understand, the better for everyone :)

Yeah, but not directly. I heard it being repeated and liked it much more than other quotes I've heard.

Ok I'm going to get back to my original question and enhance it. You have explained the size. But how can you explain the movement of the sun moving across the sky. Glare cannot be used to explain this unless light can refract through the atmosphere in a way which keeps changing even though nothing is moving. The sun moving away cannot make light refract in different directions, unless something is moving.

Now here is a choice as I see it:

1) A flat Earth does spin/move

OR

2) The Sun does move/spin

OR

3) Light can refract in ways that completely breaks the laws of refraction

None of which comply with your claims. Answers please?

Stiiiill no answer. Starting to think people are just trying to avoid the question, as with many other threads I've seen

its the gears. they move the sun and moon.

they have to be moving. i dont know about lateral motion, but they are accelerating up and 9.81ms2. obviously...
i believe the world is an oblate spheroid. anything i say that contradicts this is purely for the sake of argument.

Im probably a bit lost here, so can you clear this up for me? If the earth is flat and the sun literally moves through the sky in the day, in the same way that the stars do at night, then how does the sun come up again on the east side the next day?
