Wow!
« on: August 26, 2008, 01:35:09 AM »
It's sad in a way that people have ended up to believe this - that the earth is flat. Personally I do feel a little sorry for you.

Now, some of you here may be hindered by a general lack of intelligence, some by being bullied into thinking this by equally blinkered individuals. Some may have not bothered to look to the empirical, or even look up what that means.

I went to a religous school. It taught me to be an atheist.

Quick question. The GPS used in cars to help us navigate around. It uses geostationary satelites. Can a FE person explain how the satelites stay in place and not just fall to the flat earth we clearly all live on.

Is the earth a pancake?

FE answer: GPS uses a combination of ground-based emitters and 'stratelites' to mimic the effects of orbiting satellites (which are impossible in most FE models). GPS is controlled by the US military and as such in 'in on the conspiracy'.

PS - most people on this site don't believe the Earth is flat, just so you know

i am RE i will tell you what they are going to say to you:

-Lurk more
-read the faq (ya i know it doesn't answer anything)
-satelites arn't real
-your cars GPS uses ground whatevers to track your position

i know this is all BS but this is what they will say. This forum gets your question about once every other day.

Well LORAN seems all nice and spiffy, but the coverage map sort of sucks. Looks like all you people in south America and Australia are screwed, I guess you have to use the non existent GPS… goodluck!

Weird thing is I am a space weather guy, and my job is to figure out and report GPS error, I guess I am part of the conspiracy MUAHAHA.

This has all got to be a wind-up right? Not the GPS stuff, I mean everything. All the FE beliefs.

Like crop circles etc. A secret society with a childish penchant for this type of thing. I struggle to believe that people actually believe this due to the FACT that the earth is clearly not flat. Even typing that makes me think "did I actually need to type that...do people really think that" ...

I don't know who that Tom fellow is but if he really believes this then he's a tool. I'd imagine he's also big on 911/Moon landings/Area 51 etc/Black helicopters etc.

Black helicopters exist - I've seen them.

What's the difference between a FACT and a fact? Is a FACT even more dogmatic than a fact?

You've simply not understood.

I'm open to sensible discourse. I'm closed, however, to the foolish ramblings of those without the ability to unlock the free-thinking component of the brain.

You are free to believe in what you will, even if that means you appear ridiculous.

If we were back a few thousand years ago then a flat earth may have seemed sensible to those not looking skyward at the heavens, much like religion. But because those not closed to open thought, scientific progress and discovery proved (yes, proved) that the earth is an oblate spheroid then this argument is not valid. You can believe in it like ghosts or ID but that is your own belief. It's not true, it's not sensible and it may have a negative effect on your offspring (if you have children) because it will teach them lies.

If you want to believe this then you can.

I'll ask again. Is FE a wind up?

I think the only person trying to wind anybody up here is you.

What's so funny is you type away about how silly religion is but there you are dogmatically following what "science" tells you. All you've done is replaced the fathers for the physicists and the bishops with the biologists. You have faith in science and you follow it blindly. I prefer following neither.

Go and read about RET, peform the experiments and you will see that the earth is indeed flat.

I scoff at your supposedly open-mind (which only seems to be capable of trying to insult people).

Absolutely, I've repeatedly performed experiments that demonstrate that flat earth theory is correct.

I graduated with a degree in Physics 10 years ago then completed a PhD in applied Physics/high-speed computing. I now work in finance as a quantitative analyst which means that for the past 10 years I have been actively working as both a scientist and practitioner of scientific theory. I don't dogmatically follow what sceience tells me, I follow what science tells me because repeated experimentation proves beyond reasonable doubt that the mathematical models we create are valid.

You can't put religion and science in the same bucket for comparison. One is blind faith. The other is the constant search for truth and discovery.

I'm keen to hear about your experiemnts that prove the earth is flat. This should be good...

Experiment 1:

Take a ruler and place it on the ground, you will measure 0cm height.

Go a few km away (the furthest I've done is 20km) and do the same, the ruler will still show a height of 0cm.

This clearly demonstrates that the earth is flat.

I'm measuring the height of the land, it's consistantly 0. If you look at a curve, it shouldn't be. That shouldn't be too hard for a "scientist" to understand... if that is your real name.

Have you tried doing the same with a football?

Since when are there footballs that are 1km long let alone several? You must be one of the biggest fools we've had on this site.

He has more proofs?

Many, many, many more proofs - if you're lucky I'll tell you both of them.

I thought the last one was fairly robust.

Most people will agree with you on that.

I'll make sure I'm sitting comfortably and will write down the proof with crayon to give it extra kudos.

Yet another example of how unlikely it is that you're a scientist.

When using the term scientist think specifics - Botanist, Physicist, Chemist. Don't use an umbrella term. It makes you look, well, foolish.

Quote

Just stop for one second and think about this. Please.

You have one football and one pencil.
Now, place the pencil vertically. The height from the nib to the base (where the pencil touches the football) is, say, 10 cms? Okay, with me so far.
Now, move the pencil to another part of the football and measure again. Still 10cms.

The football is the same shape as a globe. So when you went 20km and measured the height using your ruler (or pencil) you did the same thing as above with the football.

You can't detect curvature by measuring a point on a spherical surface. It's so obvious I won't go into the details but just think about why this is for a second will you. The surface of a globe appears the same whichever part of the globe you are on.

Do you understand this?

1 km footballs? I never said that. And when you talk about length it is usual to think about linear concepts. For topics such as footballs (and the earth) think in terms of radius and diameter.

Where did you get 1 km from? I said "football" as it is a concept you may be familair with or will certainly have heard of/seen.

Don't get yourself more confused over 1 km footballs. Did you understand what I was trying to illustrate with the football analogy?

Yet again, you're just trying to avoid the issue. Please answer this simple question:

Can you get a football that is 1km long?
