Gravity = magic... well so does...
« on: August 18, 2008, 10:25:22 AM »
So us RE say gravity sticks us to the ground. The FE want to know what is gravity. You guys say we have no proof of gravity, and until we somehow prove to you gravity is holding us down you guys will say it's not there.

Fine but I want to know what the hell is pushing us forward, which is pinning us to the ground, because that's also "Magic" as far as I'm concerned.

I have seen many RE post quoting the "Theory of relativity". You guys say "that doesn't work out" because of whatever reason you pull out of a hat. But you guys still haven't worked out what the hell is pushing us. I know you guys are going to say "antimatter whatever blaaaaa" I say prove that, and untill you do that is also magic.

We have no examples anywhere of a planet or whatever you call a flat disc shaped hunk of dirt flying through space, accelerating on top of that. Atlease we can get a telescope and look at Jupiter and see it's moons rotate around it which helps show that there is somthing there keeping those moons from flying off.

One last thing, it seems like all of your theories (unproven facts) are used to support of there theories (more unproven facts)... the cycle never ends. There are very few instances where i have seen you guys back something up with a cold hard scientific fact. When that happens it usally just supports one fact and fails to support any other one.

Prolly some FE will ask now....
Why?

or something similar....like they always do ;D
Earth is round
No one is taking FE seriously because this conspiracy will fail anyway :P

What is that pressure in the core? i want to know what is pushing us? for us to accelerate none stop for 1000's of years there has to be alot of energy. what is this energy? where does it come from? Sounds like MAGIC to me.

My spider sense is detecting more hyper-literalism.  I may be off base, but I think Robosteve is referring to in RET gravity is the mutual attraction of masses and is quibbling about your use of the word "sticking", thus effectively beginning the derailment of this thread.

Maybe I'm wrong...or maybe not.  Thats only for Robosteve to say and good money says he's not going to give a concise answer on the subject.

You're posting an awful lot of good info, I've been here scarcely a week now and I've already seem dozens of RET people come and go because of the grammatical and semantical quibbling that goes on here, ultimately bogging useful and interesting threads down with back and forth arguments over the useage of a qualifier in a sentence.  If you want to get as far as Stage II arguments and past the minute details take your time and make damn sure your wording is as correct as you can make it, otherwise it jsut gets the thread spammed up with stuff like this.

Sure it does so does your theory. What I'm trying to get to is the fact that you don't have a good explanation to contradict the idea of gravity and your made up facts don't come close to cutting it. Seems like you watch old star trek episodes and quote lines from hat show here to explain real life stuff.
The problem with your ideas is they only support one or two things and not the rest then you have to dig around for some idea to support the ideas that weren't supported...like conspiracy.

ok, fine, I'll bite. I'm one...

To put it simply and clearly, do not talk about newtonian gravity on this site. The FEers believe it does not exist and is completely wrong and not even worth discussing, even as an approximation to what we see. Whenever you talk gravity on this site think ONLY of general relativity.

If you re-read all the FE-ers answers with this in mind... their answers won't seem so crazy. Pedantic, yes, crazy and wrong, no.

That said...
Why the FE'ers accept GR as an explanation of how "gravity" does its stuff is still beyond me. Fine... mass warps space in a way that makes it look like there's a gravitational attraction between 2 bodies. But WHY does mass warp space? I doubt physics will ever answer that. It's a crazy question for physics.

Want to fast forward through a bunch of these sort of discussions? Here goes...

FE'er... what's the value of PI?
RE'er #1 it's 3.14
FE'er: WRONG
RE'er #2 it's 3.14159
FE'er: WRONG
RE'er #3 it's 3.1415926
FE'er: WRONG
RE'er #4 it's 3.1415926536
FE'er: WRONG
RE'er #5: PI is an irrational number whose value can never be fully expressed in a decimal form though it's value is approximately 3.1415926536
FE'er: yea, ok, but what IS it?

it appears to me that FE'ers believe any answer that's not 100% correct is 100% incorrect. Saying PI is 3.14159 is as wrong as saying PI is 42.

Actually, PI is the ratio of a circle's circumference and its diameter.
And 42 is the answer to a completely different question.

But then you already knew that.   ;)

P.S.  Whether gravity exists or not depends on your frame of reference.

all i am trying to do in this thread is show that FE have their own "magic". They say gravity isn't there because we can't prove it. I say earth accelerating isn't there because they can't prove it. That's all i am doing here.

There are more proven facts down to the small details in RE. FE are placing Antarctica just south of Hawaii...

I agree with you.

Maybe we should ban all talk of gravity from the issue fullstop. Seeing as neither side of the debate can offer a proven mechanism behind gravity, then it serves absolutely no purpose in supporting theories one way or the other.

But-the-bing, thank you.

First of all, we don't need to prove gravity. We don't believe in it. We believe in gravitation. It sounds like semantics, but they are two entirely different theories, and saying they're the same is like saying evolution and creationism are the same. Gravity, like creationism is powered by magic and started by God (as Newton believed) while gravitation and evolution are brilliant theories by brilliant scientists that are still misinterpreted and ignored by silly people. Secondly, we can prove the earth is accelerating. Jump off a chair, and the Earth will accelerate up to meet you, then you will feel a force as your velocity changes to match that of the Earth at the particular moment. You will always still feel a force, because the Earth is always accelerating. If you fall far enough, the Earth will merely splatter you across its surface like a fly on a particularly large windscreen.
