Acceleration on RE
« on: August 08, 2008, 10:06:19 PM »
RE'ers say that the gravity from earth accelerates me, even when I am standing still on earths surface.

Could an RE'er explain how I am accelerating?

The ground accelerates you because your inertia via bent spacetime is accelerating relative to the ground towards the center of the earth. Inertia isn't sensed as acceleration, the thing accelerating yourself (fighting against your inertia) is the ground, so it is sensed as acceleration.

Same thing when you are accelerating in a car. Your inertia wants to stay at 0 mph, so when you accelerate, the thing fighting against you, your chair, accelerates into you.

If you don't understand my rambling above, it is simply that the ground accelerates into you since your inertia is "pointing" towards the center of the earth. Very similar to your UA model.

By the way, nobody can respond to your other topic because you locked it or something.

Again.
How can I be accelerating if my velocity remains unchanged?

To an inertial observer - that is, one in freefall - your velocity is changing.

rotational acceleration
Only 2 things are infinite the universe and human stupidity, but I am not sure about the former.

That's actually a great way of explaining it, thanks.

OK, I'll bite.

Who said that you are accelerating while standing still?  Acceleration due to gravity (gravitation) exerts a pull on the mass of your body towards the center of mass of the earth, but the floor (ground, chair, whatever you resting on) is resisting that pull.

BTW, result of that pull that acceleration due to gravity (gravitation) is exerting on the mass of your body is called weight.
Science is what happens when preconception meets verification.

Except that that force does not exist.  The feeling of a force results from the acceleration.
