Can someone please call CERN and advise them that switching on the LHC could now pose a real threat to all of us!  They built that long tube taking into account the curvature of the earth and whilst they say it lines up perfectly I think it's best to check, just in case....

btw I love this site.  I has made me laugh out loud, ponder human behavior, almost made me cry, forced me face my lack of math ability... Brilliant.

Bloody hell!

Shall we sneak over there in the middle of the night and straighten things out (literally) for them?

Maybe we won't need to.  Thinking about it, they must be in on this conspiracy and are just saying that they accounted for the curvature of the earth.  phew! rest easy....

Let us hope it does not work because there are a few conspiracy nuts out there (I am guessing they are on this board as well) who think that when they fire it up they will somehow destroy the universe with it

The last six words in that post show how little you know about what people are saying against the LHC.

People are saying many varied things it.  Are you contesting his use of the word 'somehow'?  Out of genuine interest which side of the, LHC will destroy the earth (whatever shape it takes), fence do you sit on?

I am partly referring to the word "somehow", but mostly to the word "universe". And while I think these people have a point that it might destroy the Earth, I think the probability of it happening is so small that it is outweight by the potential gain to scientific knowledge that the LHC could bring.

Interesting, I happen to agree with you which I have to say surprises me...

It seems that you feel, as I do, that they should proceed with 'firing it up' as the probability of it destroying the earth is very small.  How do you rationalize that with the discussion you have been having with Kasper Marstal when he presents you with 'proof' based on probabilities?

Probabilities don't prove anything. My opinion on the LHC is subjective (as all opinions are).

CERN is really an attempt to tunnel through to the bottom of the FLat Earth, and to investigate the dark matter underneath.

I agree, I tried to emphasis this by quoting the word 'proof'.

It just seems odd to me that on the one hand you opinion that the LHC probably won't destroy the earth despite nothing like it ever being tried before. But on the other, you debate for a flat earth despite, it appears, pretty staggering odds that it is round.

I am not sure this has been asked before but is, in your opinion, the earth is flat?

Feel free to tell me to naff off, I am asking out of genuine interest.

I don't see that it has any relevance to the debate what I actually believe with regard to the shape of the Earth.

I was after you opinion not your belief.   People often have irrational beliefs but are capable of forming well reasoned opinions on subjects based on the knowledge they have, even when that knowledge is incomplete.

You happily gave me you opinion on the LHC but balked when asked the same question about FE?

I personally feel that, in the interest of furthering discussion by not declaring allegiance to one particular side of the debate, it is not advisable for me to disclose my personal opinion on the shape of the Earth.

Steve's position is understandable. The moment you declare you believe the earth is fat, RE'ers call you a 'retard' or something similar. If you declare you believe the earth is spherical, yet argue FE theories, people just ignore you because you 'don't believe' and concentrate their bile on the FE 'retards', without ever feeling the need to argue theory.

Despite ambitious claims, I don't see anywhere in that article that describes a way in which the Universe may be destroyed by the LHC.

Let me point out 1 quote to you from that article "Others think the experiment will have the unfortunate side effect of destroying the universe."
Now let me show you what I had said earlier
Let us hope it does not work because there are a few conspiracy nuts out there (I am guessing they are on this board as well) who think that when they fire it up they will somehow destroy the universe with it
Now I bolded the important words for you. Of course you of all people should know that the quote from the article is more than enough proof for a conspiracy nut to believe that it will happen

I saw that. However, they do not elaborate on such a claim, which leads me to suspect that it is a hyperbole.

since when does as conspiracy nut need any further evidence than the initial claim and the parties the claim is being made against denying it will happen
