because 9 times out of 10 the question has been asked and debated many many many many many times before (night/day, sinking ships, eclipses, why don't we fall off the world, how do seasons work, how does gravity work, why don't we go faster than the speed of light, where is the edge of the world etc etc)

A 5 minute search will usually yield answers and veterans are sick to death of repeating themselves like a tape-recorder

I only direct people to the FAQ when they ask a retarded question that is clearly answered there.  And I only claim victory when I feel it has been deserved.  Oh, and I only edit people's posts to insult them when they are douchebags.
