The Moon
« on: May 11, 2008, 12:45:34 AM »
What exactly is the moon, according to FE? What's it made of, how big is it, what's its shape, etc. Can anyone give me any info on this?

Read the FAQ.

Yes, but what is the moon made of? Is it also flat?

Cheese.  Probably a sphere, but there are conflicting reports.

When you ask questions already answered in the FAQ, and have more than one or two questions posed in a post please be aware that most FE posters are going to ignore you barring severe ennui. If you don't take the time to read at least the FAQ before asking these things, then why should I take you seriously? Further the existence of the search function and "Earth: Not a Globe" makes it more likely you're not making an effort to inform yourself about FET. If you're only interested in debate for debates sake, then I'm not really interested either. If you read these things with an open mind, and still have questions or concerns, then I'm happy to help you. Unless I'm simply bored, like at the moment.

You're right. I'm sorry. I really wasn't simply planning on debating. I was looking for information, but I guess I went about it the wrong way.

I'll do better next time!  ;)

Ok, I read through the whole FAQ and there's no mention of what the moon is made of. I searched and came up mostly with the moon being made of cheese. The FAQ also said that the flatness of the moon was controversial. What do most FEers believe concerning this?

I think flat (well, convex)... mostly because of the way the light comes from the moon and that we've only ever seen one face of it. But I also believe the moon is reflecting light, not the source of it.

Interesting. I would've thought all FEers would have to believe that the moon gives off its own light, since there wouldn't be anything with light that it can reflect.
Unless the mysterious shadow object gives off light toward the moon and sun, away from the earth. I suppose it could be looked at as a flipped version of the sun, only with a much larger "spotlight" size.

Good point indeed :)

Since it is impossiblw to get to, we can't know what it is made of, though I would assume it is made out of some material you could find on earth.

The moon has to be a globe, otherwise it wouldn't appear to be round unless you were directly beneath it

The moon doesn't emit light, otherwise it would appear to be a full moon at all times

The moon doesn't move around like the FE theory says it does, otherwise it would appear to be different sizes at different times of the day.

My model doesn't include most of those things, but I doubt those that hold them will agree, no.

I also don't necessarily subscribe to the flat moon model, but those are certainly far from airtight arguments...

The moon has to be a globe, otherwise it wouldn't appear to be round unless you were directly beneath it
Can you see more of the moon when you are directly beneath it?  Are more features visible from different viewing angles?

The moon doesn't emit light, otherwise it would appear to be a full moon at all times
So there is no such thing as solar eclipses?  The sun emits light, and therefore is full at all times?

The moon doesn't move around like the FE theory says it does, otherwise it would appear to be different sizes at different times of the day.

You mean like it does?  Watch how magnificently large the setting moon or the setting sun get as they approach the horizon.  God's beautiful handiwork!  (enacted through the laws of science).

It would be a different shape from different viewing angles, an oval. A 2D disc only looks like a circle when you're facing it, while a 3D sphere looks round from all angles.

The moon doesn't emit light, otherwise it would appear to be a full moon at all times
So there is no such thing as solar eclipses?  The sun emits light, and therefore is full at all times?

Except when the moon very rarely gets in the way.

The moon doesn't move around like the FE theory says it does, otherwise it would appear to be different sizes at different times of the day.

Under the FE theory they should really be getting smaller and smaller when they approach the horizon though

Another thought occurred to me: Where did the moon's craters come from? How could an asteroid have hit the face of the moon (the part facing us)? Based on the FE model, it isn't possible.

because its cheaper to make it with  holes in because you do not have to buy extra plastic to fill them in.

The moon's face slowly turns. Or used to.
