An apostrophe. Misplaced, but still an apostrophe.

Actually, it's correct. It shows a possessive attribute. it doesn't make sense to put "Lands's". So it's Lands'.

But it's a singular "Land".  The End of the Land.  Land's End.

Lands could be a name. Which would make more sense, as that's what that apostrophe indicates.

In this case though it sounds like a classical English thing to do

just as Shakesphere has his name different on his tome stone, because it was cheaper to carve certain letters

You could say the end of the lands or the end of the land. Both would be correct.

Is it cheaper to carve "e" than "b"?

Sounds like an urban myth that it's a typographical error. Lands' End is still grammatically correct, just somewhat illogical to say. The lands end at the lands' end, you see? It's where lands (multiple lands) are ending. It sounds like an urban legend due to the fact that it's not like one person is just typing in the logo up on the computer. It goes through a process. Factories have to make these things, authorities overview the process of creating promotional materials. A slip-up on the computer isn't going to go through to print. Plus, it's not grammatically incorrect anyways, so why would it be a typographical error?

No, it's where multiple lands end. So the place is Lands' End.

From the Lands' End website:

Quote from: Gary Comer, Chairman of Lands' End
We were all sailors at that time, and our business was selling (and sometimes making) racing sailboat equipment, and duffle bags, and rainsuits and some sweaters and other clothing.

Incidentally... ..a lot of people ask why the apostrophe in Lands' End is in the wrong place. There have been some silly explanations along the way, but the truth is, it was a mistake.

It was a typo in our first printed piece, and we couldn't afford to reprint and correct it.

In the years since, the misplaced apostrophe has continued to grace our name and our label. And while it has prompted some raised eyebrows among English teachers, it also sets us apart as a company whose continuing concern for what's best for the customer is unmistakably human.

This isn't so much a matter of perscriptivism v descriptivism as it is a matter of marketing in my opinion. If there is a blatant grammatical error, people will talk about it. If people talk about it, some will undoubtedly check out the mentioned product. The way I see it, it's a cheap ploy, but a clever one.

To give them credit, you can put words in any order, however obscene it is, so long as its clear which words you are using as your verb/noun and so on. You can use you own name as an adjective and it would be perfectly accepable, since grammar isnt as concrete as spelling.
But this STILL hurts my eyes
