Frankly, he whom calls himself Anteater was one of the suspects at the forefront of the investigation.

As near as I can figure, the elephants and the giant turtle concept has fantasy novels as its primary source material and has absolutely no grounding in canon FE theory (at least, no actual FEer on this forum has ever argued in favour of it). As such, I motion for it to be removed from the FAQ (if only so that stupid noobs stop referencing it in vain and unoriginal attempts to be funny).
Could this be addressed?

Actually it was an ancient Hindu belief that the first thing created was a giant turtle -- Chukwa. Maha-pudma was an elephant (some versions have four). I think the FAQ as stands reflects the fact we do not know what in fact is on the bottom of the earth so we should be careful ruling anything out. We're open minded, see?

I recall the earth resting on a turtle also being in certain Native American myths, however, we here at FES base our beliefs on science, not myths. ::)

I think it may needlessly upset the hindu population of FE'ers.

In case anyone should ask what the turtles themselves are resting on, "It's turtles all the way down."

An anecdote from Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time.

Exactly. The anecdote is very well known. I'm surprised Oscar, isn't more well-read.

I am aware of it being mentioned rarely in contemporary literature; find me a believer in Flat Earth who will argue in favour of the theory and I will drop the matter (you'll get something special if it's Tom).

I mentioned Maha-pudma's gas as an explanation of earth's acceleration. I don't know why anything coming from Tom would surprise you. He's as likely to drop that story as anyone...

We should think long and hard about just jettisoning part of our flat earth culture.  Mightn't it be considered too progressive?

It wouldn't surprise me...but it would still be epic.

Fine. I'll give up my only attempt at seriously contributing to FES. I hope your happy. :'(

We go just be half-assed/arsed and kick out the elephants as a compromise to Oscar.

One is free to enjoy turtles and elephants in the privacy of their own home...just keep them out from under my Flat Earth! >:(

I only wanted to provide the noobs with less trolling fodder...is that so selfish? :(

The turtles are at 4300 Leavenworth Drive. There.

Yes, it is immensely selfish. What would trolls do if there wasn't stuff to troll? Please, think of the trolls.

I rather think the trolls will find something to complain about, turtles or no ::)

In my opinion it adds much needed levity to a very serious matter...

The trolls are always the first (and only ones) to mention it, so I just found it unnecessarily annoying.

Whatever, though. I've failed enough already in this thread to continue it...

To use Schroedinger against his will, until we are able to send someone to look under the Earth, elephants and turtles are as good an explanation as the more commonly held belief of "nothing".

For all we know, there could be many more stars below.... or even some dead cats.

Far be it from me to question the FAQ, but if the answer is meant to be ambiguous in order to insinuate the lack of knowledge, should such a specific example be used? Rather than four elephants and a turtle, why not something equally facetious? Frankly, it is displaying unwanted favouritism.

My apologies, good sir.

I believe the subject of my poor memory has come up before - apparently it doesn't stretch as far back as the previous page.
