Sick and tired of the non-believers!
« on: February 29, 2008, 02:07:01 PM »
I am so sick and tired of people who continue to question the validity of the flat-earth model. Even at the school where I teach, there are still many who question the science behind the explanations. I can understand that some of my 5th grade students don't have the brain power yet to grasp the concept or to see beyond the lies, but for an adult I consider it an UNPARDONABLE SIN.

And, to the non-believers who are still clinging to the round-earth myth, here is a great scientific web page that will change your mind. THIS IS IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE OF A FLAT EARTH LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:

I saw all the experiments and i can see that all of them are very similar

The reason the experiments prove the flat earth theory is because the measurements their using are miniscule.
6 miles is not enough to create circular angle.
You need a very large surface, which will actually create angle change ( you forgot the earth is very big, more than 20000 miles in diameter)

24 feet is quite a drop to not notice.

What?  The apparent drop at 6 miles is 24 feet.  That is what you originally contested, right?

And using 6 miles as a test would prove nothing

So you are saying a 24 mile drop is not sufficient?

I sure wish you RE'ers would stick with just one model.  The earth is apparently over 20,000 miles in diameter now.  It would be nice if you guys could agree on a number instead of everyone just having their own.

Says the group of people who make up and alter the conspiracy and random objects to account for things happening in nature? I mean, Tom is a great example of this, but there isn't a static FE model either.

Neither.

Quote from: Wikipedia
The Earth's shape is very close to an oblate spheroid—a rounded shape with a bulge around the equator—although the precise shape (the geoid) varies from this by up to 100 meters. The average diameter of the reference spheroid is about 12,742 km.

24 feet, over 6 miles...the angular distance would be...0.043 degrees. I can see missing that...

Good, so we have finally put the 'sinking ship' phenomenon to rest.

Apparently, the human eye is capable of viewing 16 miles on a clear day, so no. Furthermore, technically we are capable of viewing an angular resolution of up to 0.03 degrees, but that's just a best-case scenario, so meh, I can still see missing it. Over 16 miles, it makes much more sense. Also bear in mind that the sinking ship effect is the difference between seeing it and not seeing it, not actually noticing the difference between what is and what it ought to be.

So why is it called the sinking ship effect and not the disappearing ship effect?

When you used narcberry reasoning to end an argument that is about 6 miles.
