The Great Global Warming Debate.

With the advent of yet another load of ridiculous media hype about "Global Warming," this time about ice in Antarctica, I thought I'd get a feel for peoples opinion on the matter.

The truth, of course, is that there is more ice in Antarctica than there ever has been. Yet, many newspapers and tv networks are giving the impression that ice is falling into the sea faster than piss from a drunk man.

Here's my proof (and, like a good scientist, the source):




Since satellite imagery only began in 1979, that's as far back as our technology can realistically analyse the trends in ice growth/reduction for an entire continent.

I was going to post some quotes from relevant articles relating to this "crisis" but I'm sure all the warming fanatics will do that anyway.

So. Let the Great Global Warming Debate begin.

I think "Global Warming" is just a political strategy to reduce human consumption (energy, fuel, waste, etc). However, global warming is still a relevant idea because, based on many analysis and experiments, temperature has increased over the past decades. Whether or not human-made activities contribute to the rise of such phenomenon is a matter of much greater debate.

First off, I call it planar warming, and yes, I believe it exists. I think your "satellite maps" are inaccurate for a fairly obvious reason. The fact is, none of us actually know how much ice there is in Antarctica, because none of us fully know how big it is. I am concerned that planar warming may damage the Ice Wall, and in fact the planar warming coverup is, in my opinion, an integral part of the GlobCon.

(Sorry, this might seem like a cross-post in the wrong forum, but hey I have to state my opinion on this).

In reference to Dogplatter and the rest of the people on the planet... it doesn't matter what shape you believe in... go back through history and you will find that the Earth simply goes through cycles. End of story. Right now we're headed for some chillies. Of course we'll have a hot summer here and there just like any other time... but the funny thing is, this last summer was one of the nicest and most moderate ones most of the world has seen in a long time. Some it was downright cold and down here in Mississippi - it's the first snow they've seen in over 14 years this far south in the state! And it's friggin COLD! ;D

For those who say "Oh, well global warming can cause temperatures to fall overall" - well, that's not what you said in the beginning. Also, that's counter intuitive, it also doesn't make any sense, and it doesn't back up the data that the ozone has already repaired itself.

I think global warming exists, we can't expect to pile lots of carbon dioxide, water and pollutants into the atmosphere without there being an effect, but it is exaggerated at least a small by the government and media in order to get more tax/money from us, and to make resources last longer.

considering the volume of CO2 in the atmosphere, I highly doubt it has an effect.

Methane and water vapour have higher concentrations in the atmosphere, and produce more of a warming trend.

In fact, the output of methane from termite mounds is colossal. Since the weight of termites is more than the weight of humans, we could argue that termite mounds affect global climate more than we do.

I read the news and the scientists predicted that in 3 years, all the glacial ice in the Arctic Circle will melt, causing catastrophic effects (disrupting the hydrologic cycle in the oceans and rising the sea level). They first predicted it will be 500 years, but now they come down to 3 years. Exaggerating the concept, indeed. However, since these scientists are experts in the subject and their explanations could be plausible, the whole "global warming" idea still remain true.

i've actually read that we are on a brink of a cooling shift.

Personally I believe the whole global warming panic is caused by governments worrying about diminishing rescources.

Scientists have theorized that the suns magnetic field is due to undergo a reduction in size as part of the natural cycle or something. This would cause dramatic cooling.

Whether or not Global warming is happening or not, fossil fuels won't last forever and any initiative which gets us to move into more sustainable energy is a good thing.

Global warming is caused by Al Gore's specific brain-wave patterns interfering with the Earths magnetic field. He should have been elected and then assassinated.

A 200 foot rise in sea level is a high-yield, worst-case type scenario what's perfect for that bit of speculative fiction I'm working.

However, it is certainly not a foregone conclusion in this reality.
As has been noted, climate models vary greatly in their input/output protocols, depending greatly upon who's paying (surprise).

Obviously, some measurable short-term change in climate is underway.
As to what extent human activity contributes to/causes this? 
That's a tough one.

I'm reasonably certain that evolving to renewable E-gen sources wouldn't make the sitution worse than being held hostage to OPEC; especially now that little George's muddled dream of making-over Baghdad into "jus' another oil-pumpin', wes-Texas town" is failing so miserably.

Just thought I'd add something to the debate...

I was watching the news this morning, and there was a story on "Scotlands climate change bill"

Through the report, phrases like "the climate crisis" and "the global warming phenomenon" were used.

After this report, the next item was the weather: "Temperatures are set to drop next week..."

Needless to say, I lol'd.
