what would convice you
« on: January 20, 2008, 02:36:07 PM »
a question to everyone here both sides alike,

what evidence would make you accept that the other side is right and you were wrong?

for me to switch sides it would take a lot of evidence that pretty much refutes our entire view of science, nature and pretty much everything. For instance if i were to wake up and find i had been in the matrix and the whole reality i had inhabited was a fake and then someone showed me a flat earth from matrix space or whatever. needless to say it would take a major paradigm shift for me to think again.

this question to everyone then.

extra points if you can give an experiment we can do that, if it had a certain outcome, would cause you to reject your view. there must be no room for post hoc rationalization . you state the test, we do it, you are convinced.

I for one would be willing to chip in for a suborbital balloon ride for one lucky FEer or perhaps a trans antarctic flight (with stopwatch provided of course).

any takers?

my apologies GeneralGayer,

so you are saying that a glimpse of the curvature of the earth with your own eyes from for instance a high altitude balloon or a commercial airplane would convince you of the earth's rotund nature?

Sure, would be silly to argue with my own eyes wouldnt it?

I think a trip to the space station would do it for me.

Actually I nearly always sit by the window on planes...

You can't see the curvature on the earth from a commerical plane, it's not high enough.

I would probably expect a reliable model that explains most of what we see and allows for a FE. Currently the only reliable model that explains most of what we see is a RE model.

I think I would like to see the edge of the world behind the ice wall,
then I'd climb down it a descend into shear lunacy probably.

good thing that won't happen...

I have asked this before. The question was largely ignored when I asked it. TheEngineer was the only FEer to seriously reply. Most REers said that a trip to Antarctica to verify the existence of the ice wall would convince them of FET.

How could anything convince me that the earth is round when I already know that it's flat?
Your scientific ignorance is so obnoxiously apparent. A true scientist knows that he can never "know" anything about our universe. The best we can ever do is theorize - and to take a theory as absolute irrefutable truth is frankly ridiculous. If you cannot possibly be swayed to the other side, why debate? Debate without uncertainty is not debate - it's just stupid people yelling at each other.

right, Tom is so totally certain of FE that not even taking him to the MOON and making him look at earth from there would convince him!

It obviously appears spherical because the sun's light is circular

::)

Oh, and by the way Tom, I thought you held that the sun's light was refracted through the atmosphere in order to give the sun coverage needed on the Equinox.  I mean, pick one.  Is the sun's light refracted to make oval and crescent shapes, or is it completely circular?

brilliant a short time after joining the forum proof that one of the main proponents is an idiot or a troll.

seriously all I had to do was satisfy curiousity so I could get back to doing more important things.. :)

but, how do we establish if someone is an idiot or a troll....

I'd be convinced of FE if I found indisputable evidence of FE. Frankly I haven't found any evidence of FE.  :(

yup, your name appears twice, wanna guess why?
Once because I waste my time on this site trying in vain to convince a bunch of retards the Earth isn't flat and the world governments aren't out to get them.
Second because I believe in a scienctific theory which is based on observation and backed up by insummountable mountains of evidence, instead of believing a hypothesis from the distant pased backed up by.. well, Tom Bishop.

To make me an FEer:

The goverments admission of the conspiricy.
Something that disproves all science.
A model of the formation of a flat earth.
A picture of it.

All that, or just me watching the earth from space.
