Why the Earth appears round from high altitude pictures

Tom holds that this is because of the spotlight that is shining no the Earth.

Well, OK, then we can't see the dark part of the Earth?

There is no distinguishable difference between space and the dark part of the Earth.  We should be able to see SOMETHING, like night lights, illumination from the Moon's reflected light, SOMETHING.

So, discuss.

It's the same reason why no stars are seen during high altitude shots: they are too faint to be seen. Cameras cannot deal with the high contrast between an enormous light source and a tiny one. Therefore, the tiny specks of light disappear from the camera's view.

When taking photographs in space, the Earth is much brighter than the stars and the unilluminated areas of the earth; therefore, the aperture and exposure time for the film must be set very low, or else the earth would be too bright to see any detail.

Wait Tom, I thought that all pictures from space were fake, and that it is impossible to go into space to take said pictures without the Earth passing you.

Wait Tom, I thought that all pictures from space were fake, and that it is impossible to go into space to take said pictures without the Earth passing you.

It's possible to reach the edge of space by using home-made high altitude dirigibles.

Circles are round in two dimensions, spheres in three. Besides, FEers always deny that the earth even appears round. They have always said that the curvature is caused by hills and the like.

The sun's spotlight upon the earth is round, therefore the earth appears curved. Curvature results from the fact that on a flat earth we are looking down at the circular spotlight of the sun. A circle is always curved in two dimensions.

I can only honestly say that in the images I see curvature in two dimensions. How can you demonstrate that there is curvature in three?

Anything which is claimed to have been taken at an altitude much greater than 40000 feet is a forgery or has been in some way tampered (travel beyond such an altitude is impossible within the scope of present technology).

yeah, right! the standard FE answer: "any picture that shows a round earth MUST be fake just because FErs say it must be fake"!

hell, tom's "spotlight" bullshit always has been rediculous: it's his pathetic attempt to explain sunrise+sunset, which anyone KNOWS is the result of earth's curvature!

One thing I've never understood about the spotlight effect is why the sun is lighting up an area that's shaped like a circle, when it should be lighting up an area shaped something like this:


It's a very rough plot, but there's no way you could get the curvature you get in most photos in this situation.

still think it's impossible to go higher than 40,000?
