Why I Believe in a Spherical Earth
« on: December 20, 2007, 02:51:15 PM »
I don't have the time or money to conduct experiments in bodies of water, look through telescopes at sinking ships, buy expensive trips into space, or anything like that.

I believe in a spherical earth because of the consensus of trained and qualified contemporary experts and professionals in physics, astronomy, and geography, that the earth is indeed (more or less) spherical.

Gven that this consensus has formed in the most scientifically advanced age in the history of mankind, the burden of proof is now on FE.

I find the FE model very attractive and appealing, but I will continue to accept RE until I see FE proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

So in other words, you believe in RE because you're a sheep.

When I broke my ankle, and a number of doctors told me surgery was necessary, was I a sheep for believing them? Should I have started conducting my own experiments to verify what they were saying?

So when people smarter and more educated tell you something you can't believe it without being a sheep?  Are you an old person who still listens to punk rock and wears black?  Are you fighting the establishment or what?  :D

Yes. Baaaaaa.

Do you really think I should have started doing my own experimental reseach (which could take me years) to verify the doctors' opinions, in the meantime living with a broken ankle?

If so, you are retarded.

Appeal to authority is a fallacy.

Why do you believe that?

It's only a fallacy when the authority is not trustworthy. Read Professor Douglas Walton's book on the subject.

Back in the 1600s, priests were considered trustworthy sources regarding witchcraft.

Should someone growing up at the time have taken it for granted that witchcraft existed, and witches must be killed, because that's what the consensus was?  The obvious conclusion drawn from this would be that witches were burned at the stake for just reasons.  Do you feel that that is the case?

Another problem with your original post (it may be what you edited, I can't remember) is where you state that "this consensus has formed in the most scientifically advanced age in the history of mankind."  Ancient Greece was the most scientifically advanced age in the history of mankind?  ???

Back in the 1600s, priests were considered trustworthy sources regarding witchcraft.

Priests were considered trustworthy sources only on the basis of religious faith in the Church. We are living in a much more scientifically advanced age, and contemporary physicists and astronomers are trained in the scientific method, unlike priests. There is no comparison here.

You migh as well argue that I should never believe a surgeon's opinion because back then people listened to priests.

Another problem with your original post (it may be what you edited, I can't remember) is where you state that "this consensus has formed in the most scientifically advanced age in the history of mankind."  Ancient Greece was the most scientifically advanced age in the history of mankind?  ???

As I said in my original post, I am relying for my belief on the contemporary consensus. Since this consensus involves only contemporary people, by definition it can only be formed in the most scientifically advanced age in the history of mankind i.e. now.

But you are right: this consensus is the outcome of many centuries of detailed empirical and mathematical research into these issues, dating back to the ancient Greeks. Even Rowbotham-type ideas were given a fair shot by Alfred Russel Wallace.

Please ask one of the many trained and qualified contemporary professionals in physics, astronomy, and geography, who all agree that the earth is a globe.

Tell me, Tom, if you were driving down a one-way street, and everyone else was driving in the opposite direction to you, would you not think you had most likely made a mistake?

Tell me, Tom, if you were driving down a one-way street, and everyone else was driving in the opposite direction to you, would you not think you had most likely made a mistake?

that's a good analogy.  of course, it doesn't necessarily mean you aren't right and everyone else wrong, and that you should not stand your ground.  (for a moment let's dismiss where the metaphor would break down: in that even being right, you'll still get run over.  that isn't applicable to primarily intellectual disagreements.)

but, it does suggest that the odds are, you are wrong, and you'll need to present a pretty damn good argument if you want to convince anyone, especially when the most obvious evidence (street signs and stop lights) suggest you couldn't be more wrong.

as a kid and all the way up until several years ago, i used to love zombie movies.  but something always troubled me: if, in real life, i found myself the last man alive and everyone else were zombies (yes i did see 'i am legend' and its predecessors), could i be absolutely, completely sure that i wasn't just insane and a deadly threat to everyone else - very much not undead and quite sane?  which would better explain the evidence?  i'm not entirely sure i, or anyone honest enough to actually face such an unlikely question, could be sure.  i might just have to try evasion only, without the use of deadly force, even if it killed me.  because: even if i concluded that the odds of me being insane were fantastically low, the consequences of me being wrong would be absolutely, catastrophically unacceptable.  the overall calculated risk [odds * cost], then, might not even be worth my own life.  run, but don't shoot.

which just goes to show: you must have a zombie evasion plan in place.  just pretending it will never happen is not going to save you from going insane anyway.  or something like that.

wait.  i mean, everyone must have an insanity plan.  where you spell out to yourself, how you will deal with the possibility that you have in fact gone insane, and what clues might exist to suggest it.  (such as fervently and dogmatically believing an idiotic idea in a profound spiritual manner, something that almost everyone else, including leaders of science (whom you believe are a conspiracy - a key ingredient of schizophrenia), are pretty sure is false.  sure, there are low odds you are actually not crazy, everyone else is crazy, and you are in fact right.  many a hero of history has proven that.  even very paranoid ones.  but the odds are far, far, *far* higher that you are just fucking nuts.  and history tends not to record the exponential orders of magnitude more cases of that.
