So.... The Real FES...?
« on: November 12, 2007, 10:37:05 PM »
Okay, so this is the FES forums, but is it the center of the "official" FES?

http://www.alaska.net/~clund/e_djublonskopf/Flatearthsociety.htm

Okay, so this site has the "crazy" going for it, but I can't tell if it's being facetious or not.   ???

Quote
----After spending over sixteen million dollars and using over 48 thousand yards of industrial strength strapping tape, we of the Flat Earth Society were able to construct an enormously powerful neurotransmitter that can implant suggestions directly into the brains of the nearby non-Flat Earthers. Having set it up just outside of the Russian Antarctic exploration post (Vostok), we are awaiting word that all three scientists and 174 penguins have been shown the light.

See what I mean?  I swear, if TomB posted this on the forum tomorrow, I would not even blink in surprise...

On a side note... I was reading this website... all I can say is WHAT THE F*CK?!

...omg.

The original flat earth was confined, restricted, and twisted into a perverse spherical shape by a conspiracy of TELEVISION BROADCASTERS in an attempt to realize their dream of TOTAL HUMAN MIND CONTROL through subsurviant captive homogonized market share....The big question of course is how they managed to spherize the Earth. There is some speculation that they somehow managed to tinker with some of the cosmological constants that define our particular universe in such a way as to redefine the world's stable state from flat to spherical.

Now, I'm starting to think TomB is the sane one...  :o :o :o

Okay.  So, um... This isn't an "official" site, is it?  IS there an official site?  I want to see it if it exists...   :'(

This is as official as it gets.  Daniel once talked about starting a website to accompany the forums, but nothing has come to fruition, yet.

Yes. This site is a big troll magnet, it attracts and absorbs trolls so other forums don't have to suffer.

Something like that would be nice, especially to coordinate local efforts with planar efforts.

2001 isn't a long time ago. And it hasn't ended, it's schismed. There are still local Flat Earth chapters and groups.

Besides - as long as even one person knows the truth - there will ALWAYS be a Flat Earth Society.

Someone should start up the OFFICIAL version again, then!   ;D

There's an OFFICIAL Southwest of England Flat Earth Society. If nobody else steps up to the plate soon, we'll probably be filling Johnson's power vacuum.

Neat indeed :D we already locally publish a newsletter.

We also just got a new shipment of pro-FE badges in for our members:

Hopefully we'll be looking to go national/international within a year or so, once we build up a bit of a bigger support base.

Nope, all I've got here is a grainy webcam. We'll be documenting our next field trip with a decent camera, I'll see if I can post some pics of a few badges when we do that.

It's never gone out of existence. The FES transcends organizational structure - if there are Zeteticists anywhere in the world, there's an FES.

But yes, there might soon be an organized, International FES fully active again.

No. I was just trying to sound heroic and deep.

But yeah, we'll be organizing national and then international membership pretty soon, so I'll be able to ship badges and other merch off to you non-Brit folks.

Daniel mentioned restarting a nationwide reincarnation of the society and following in Shenton's footsteps, but I haven't heard from him for several months, and my own local group is thriving so we may just end up doing it instead.

Wow nice. Sucks I live in the southeast (when I'm in England) can I have a badge anyway? Pretty please?

Can I join? Will it be full of farmers? Do I get a badge?

You can join. It won't be full of farmers, because I hate farmers. I'm too cool for badges. Maybe a T-Shirt

How many are in your local group?

We started our membership roster a few weeks back and so far have 20 registered members (to be honest, the number of true zeteticists in our group may be lower - I get the feeling a few people are in it for the novelty value - and the badges and shirts). We're picking up new faces all the time though.

Basically, in terms of your own chapter - you need a good public speaker, someone well versed in FET and able to command a crowd. Hold some energetic seminars. As far as merch goes, T-shirts are a nightmare - unless you have demand in the hundreds from the start, you probably won't break even on sales. Badges and stickers are the best fundraising merchandise.

Then again, decking out your full members in cool uniforms does have its allure, in terms of publicity and general pazzazz.

Make sure you keep it active. You need dedication - meet every week, plan field research and keep recruiting members and sustaining interest.

At seminars and talks, you're bound to get globularist hecklers and naysayers. This is good. It's great opportunity to let FET shine and make your critics look stupid - imagine the newbie threads on this forum about circumnavigation and gravity , happening in real life during a presentation, and then slating them in the flesh. It's awesome.

:o I WANT A FLAT EARTH SOCIETY T-SHIRT.

We'll start shipping them nationally/internationally once we get enough demand and once we officially assume a national rather than a local role. The thing is, it's so hard to break even on them even without P&P. We do ours as part of a membership pack which includes badges, stickers, t-shirt and subscription to "the zeteticist" (our newsletter). But we're probably not ready to handle international membership just yet. Once we get an independant website up, we might be able to run it through that.
