Quick Question

How many of you FE'rs are religous? Does your religion have anything to do with the reason you believe the earth is flat?
And be honest.

i think it stands to reason that those who believe in god would also be quite persuaded to believe something as preposterous as a flat earth.

Well that's what I'm thinking. Many people grow up thinking their religous views are the right ones, and would go to such lengths as blowing themselves up to prove so. Not to mention creating a website dedicated to such an irrational idea.

Don't forget the persecution of Round Earthers in the middle ages faced from the church.

Very few of us are religious.  I, for example, hate religion.
"Once again the apostles of science are found to lack the scientific credentials for their faith. This not an indictment of science; it only shows again that the choice of science over other forms of life is not a scientific choice."

Very few? Where is your proof?
And so if religion has nothing to do with it, what drives you to believe in such a theory?

this sort of argument is exactly the kind that FE's use to say the earth is flat, rather than producing evidence .

What are you talking about? You've yet to prove that they have to be religious to believe the FE theory, you just assumed it. The burden of proof is on you.

No, I simply asked a question to which i got a very limited response. If you're going to answer the question don't give me bullshit answers that you came up with off the top of your head and get angry when I ask you to back it up with some evidence.

Assume much? Also, every FE'er I've met on this forum so far have all been atheists, but I couldn't possibly speak for all of them.

This coming from someone who joined less then 3 weeks ago. Maybe you're assuming too much, I read through "Flat Earth Believers" forum and if you read a word of anything they speak, it's clear to me that there are religous believers.

Well atleast the ones who truly believe the earth is flat anyway. Anything that can't possibly be explained in a logical manner such as why we have eclipses(and trust me - a shadow object that you can't explain is anything BUT logical) is merely pushed aside and treated as if it MUST work, even though they can't truly explain it; but that's a different argument for a different day.
What I want to truly find out is what motivates people to believe in such a theory?

I am offended by that insinuation.  What, so belief in God is equal to scatterbrained and unsubstantiated theories and insanity?

Ask all the FE'ers here.  Not all (or even most) of them believe in God.  Of course, there are some (go see the Flat Earth Believers forum for some examples).

Also, there was a poll, but it's disappeared.  It's linked in the FAQ, though.

Also in the FAQ:

Q: "Are most or all FE's Biblical literalists, who feel like their religious belief system would be threatened by a round (i.e. spherical) earth, or are there any atheists/agnostics who are FE's as well?"

A: Not all FE's are biblical literalists. This poll has more details: Poll
