In the FE, why...
« on: November 13, 2007, 08:52:28 AM »
is the a need for daylight savings time? does the sun (for no particular reason) slow its rotation atop the Earth? just curios, I havent heard this one in discussion before.

The sun experience several oscillative patterns. The annual pattern is slow, and we drift into needing daylight savings and out of needing daylight savings.

There is no need for daylight savings time, period.  It is an archaic practice that serves no real purpose.

I agree here. Basically daylight savings was nothing more than 2 things. In the very olden days it provided more daylight to work outside. I more recent times it was continued to be used for energy conservation. (edit: I say was because there are several counties throughout the US that no longer recognize it)

Really, time is time, and daytime is daytime, and our placing our own idea of hours, min, seconds upon it is our own frame of reference to be able to describe it. No matter what model you use.

It provides more daylight during working hours. This means a direct increase in productivity and morale. Don't you like to be productive and happy?

Perhaps you may be right in that reference - in an outside environment with construction crews, etc. Point being, in this day and age we have other means of working - and do so quite often for the convenience of making the modern world go on as it does - to all hours of the night. Artificial lighting, creative relaxation methods during breaks to boost morale, etc. (Including construction crews, etc. Just take a look at road workers, housing crews, and so on)

It is a nice idea, but entirely unnecessary in today's world.

I live in Arizona.  Having an extra hour of daylight during the summer makes me want to kill kittens.

That is the real reason for DST.

I remember daylight savings time actually gave me an extra hour to study for my midterm.
