Ok, you guys claim that everything is accelerating upwards at 9.8m/s, and that planes stay up by exerting lift on the atmosphere. Then why is it that when I jump upwards, I fall back down again? According to your theory I should just keep going upwards at 9.8+[my jumping velocity].

Why does the earth catch up to me?

My guess is because once you're off the ground, the earth isn't accelerating you at 9.8m/s^2 anymore.  When I jump, it's like "Whoa, I'm in the air.  But the earth isn't pushing me upwards anymore.  So like, it's gonna catch up to me."  But I dunno, don't take my word for it.

But you say that everything in the universe is accelerating upwards at 9.8m/sē.

Clearly I am part of the universe, whether I'm on the Earth or not.

If you're being pushed upwards by the earth, then the only reason you're accelerating is...well, because you're being pushed upwards by the earth.  Now, if you were off of the flat earth and still accelerating due to whatever's making the earth accelerate, that would be different.  But the only reason you're affected by what's under the earth making it accelerate is because it's pushing the earth into you.

FEs would say because the earth is accellerating, which is not to be confused with moving at a constant rate. once you jump up, the earth is not directly accellerating you anymore, and it's moving faster then it was when you jumped, so it catches up.

ugh defending FEers feels dirty.
