Period of rotation
« on: October 25, 2007, 01:20:22 PM »
How come the period of rotation of earth is 23 hrs 56 minutes and 4 seconds if it looks like this: ____ (in shape).  Jupiter is much taller than a theoretic flat Earth but it's period of is almost 10 hours.  Venus which is a perfect sphere rotates once every 243 days.  This shows that the fatter a planet is, the faster it rotates.  Wouldn't the Earth rotate within minutes for it to be flat?

The earth doesn't rotate.

Then how come when you flush the toilet the water goes in a 'cyclone' shape?  Sorry to bring that topic up.

Also, the only reason why the Earth could be flat is if it was spinning very fast.  That is why Jupiter is fat.  All of Earth's mass would come together and form a sphere if it wasn't rotating.

I assume you mean the urban myth that if you go to austrailia a toliet will flush in reverse.  It is actually due to toilet bowl design more than anything.

There are many reasons the earth could be flat.

and there are many more reasons why the Earth IS round.

Hi JNB228,
Mercury is much closer to the Sun and has substantially less mass.Because of this the Sun's gravity impacts to a greater degree and is  experiencing gravitational tidal influence .Eventually Mercury will rotate on its axis in the same period as its orbit and only one face will ever be "see" the Sun.
Jupiter (and virtually all contracting bodies) is spinning due to a thing called "conservation of angular momentum" as its volume gets smaller its rotation period gets less in a direct proportion.Having said that the Sun also has a gravitational tidal influence on Jupiter which is winning the battle .Thus Jupiter's rotation is slowing as we speak.

If it is slowing, then it would have been spinning uncontrolibly fast a long time ago.

No,
Conservation of angular momentum is speeding it up, gravitational tidal Locking is slowing it down.
When you say "uncontrollably" thats a bad word to use.Sure its faster than Earth but why should it be comparable? There are things called Pulsars , Quasars and even Neutron Stars that are immense and spin at incompressible speeds.
They are fascinating.

I mean millions of years ago.  Wouldn't it have been spinning much faster then?

Well you have to talk in terms of Billions of years really, not millions. In answer to your question it is thought that Jupiter did spin substantially quicker in its early life.

So did the Earth, (in RE), until the moon slowed it down.

Help! There's a penis in my ear!

Earth's rotation is stil slowing down, and the moon is getting further away. Don't give me any, Smarti****, the only person here who (acts like he) is a true retard here is

YOU

as a re'er, i can say username is correct on this one. it drives me nuts how people believe it's due to the coriolis effect. only very large systems - e.g. hurricanes - are affected by it.
