How come i don't hear in the news  " Today a ship fell off the edge of the earth into oblivion"

Prepare, here comes another conspiracy  ;D

well, you remember Titanic?
Titanic fell of the Flat Earth, because it rammed the Ice Wall.
The government tried to cover this up so they said it just sank.

I think some FE'ers are willing to even believe this.......

And since we all know that metal is stronger than ice... ;D

I get it, and to make it less of a lie and more verifiable, they claimed it just hit an iceberg, but why didn't the survivers notice that there was an ice wall that stretched to the horizon? A little bigger than an ice berg even if your preoccupied dying you'd notice.

Cast iron be brittle.  You must heat to aboout 740C and quench it to you get Martensite.  That way it will be magnetic and travel along the magnetic vectors of the earth to save fuel.

Yeah, but metal doesn't mean its stronger than ice.  Are you saying mercury (a liquid but also a metal) is stronger than ice?.

And yes, Titanic was made of iron and other metallic materials.

"The 46,000-ton Titanic was made of steel held together with some three million rivets. They secured both beams and plates. Each rivet was formed at a factory into a mushroom shape; it was heated at the work site to incandescent temperatures and then inserted into the aligned holes of plates and beams. The glowing-hot end, or tail, was then hammered down to lock the parts firmly together.

The rivets were made of wrought iron, which contains some slag.

Yes, but every nautical engineer understood the prevalence of icebergs and the damage they can ensue.  You would expect such a large and expensive oceanliner to possess a hull with a specific thickness and curvature to disperse the stress.  Didn't they have stress regulations?

Yes, but every nautical engineer understood the prevalence of icebergs and the damage they can ensue.

It depends, since they never know which part of the ship will hit an iceberg if the collision occurs. If the ship's side (the weakest) hits the iceberg, penetration ensures.

Why didn't the crew just reverse the engines and direct the ship for a bow impact?  Why strike it with the weak hull?

Doesn't the story say something about not noticing it until too late? I'm sure they didn't intentionally let the ship hit the iceberg.

An iceberg is very big. It may look small at the surface of the ocean, but if you dive in, you can see there's a big chunk of ice below it. The bow maybe strong (like a gigantic cleaver), but if the Titanic just ram right into the iceberg, the ship will stuck. That's why the ship have to turn. Unfortunately, she didn't turn fast enough.

The Titanic sunk because metallurgy was in its infancy.  The type of metal used and the forming process was new.  What was not understood at the time was that many metals have a threshold temperature at which they transition from ductile to brittle.  When the ship was built in the warm water port, the hull was ductile, thus able to absorb impact energy.  Out at sea, the water temperatures were below the brittle transition temperature, meaning the hull fractures on impact instead of deforming.  The Titanic was doomed before she even left port.

Actually, my understanding is that if the ship had just hit the iceberg head-on it would still have been damaged (of course) but it wouldn't have sunk and there wouldn't have been the loss of life that there was.

Yeah, she would.  She is already doomed even before she saw the iceberg. True, she could have just stuck there and signal for nearby aid ships/boats. That way, the casualties could be much lower.

Wait.

I want TheEngineer to tell me what he REALLY believes.

I've been under the assumption all this time that he was a FE'er with above-average intelligence, although eccentric in his beliefs about the shape of the world.

If he does not believe this theory, then NONE of the FE believers have substantial intelligence to warrant argument.

I'm not trying to disprove FE here;  Intelligence of believers has nothing to do with accuracy of the belief.

But, for my own peace of mind, I would like to know if Engy specifically believes this.  Pretty much all of the other intelligent "FE'ers" have been determined to not be for FET at all.  I mean, TomB isn't exactly a brain surgeon.  Dogplatter never posts (and made that weird post about penguins...).  Daniel I have never seen actually post.  Username (who even knows if he believes it?) mostly regurgitates what other people say.
