Magical RE north pole
« on: September 17, 2007, 08:53:19 AM »
Introduction

A major difference between RE and FE is the alignment of our magnetic poles. RE has two points, FE has a point and a rim.

So on a round earth, your south pole on a magnet will point to the earths north pole.

This leads to something that is easily overlooked about FE. Because the south pole is a circle on a flat earth, there are many places a compass is attracted to. If you are standing on the earths north pole there is an equal pull from the south pole of the earth in every direction. However, as you move away from the north pole, you get more points on the south pole in the opposite direction. This means that if you add up all the points of the south pole rim and their vectors, you will have a vector that goes through the north pole. These many many south pole points are much more than one north pole point.

So on a flat earth, your north pole on a magnet will point to the earths north pole. (Even though it is really pointing to the net vectors of the south pole rim)

Experiment
Things you will need:
Kitchen sink (it can stay in your kitchen)
Bowl
Rectangular magnet, labeled for north and south

Fill the sink with water.
Place the magnet in the bowl.
Place the bowl in the sink, so that it will float.

Conclusions
If the north pole of the magnet points north, the earth is flat.
If the south pole of the magnet points north, the earth is round.

Thats is probably the stupidest experiment I've ever heard (though not quite because you've had dumber ones, like the falling rock)

Dumb as in it proved your magical model wrong?

No, dumb because you and I both know thats not how the RE compass works. I'm sure your going to argue otherwise, but the point remains, that you dont know what your talking about

1) Pick a side
2) Argue

No, I'll actually argue for both sides. The RE compass works because there is a north and south pole. the north end will point north, the south end will point south, no contest. As for RE, the north side will point north (like RE), and the south will point towards whichever part of the wall is closest to it. they both work the same in RE and FE (though I hate to admit it)

Than how do you explain the results? Both models are wrong?

Fail.

South poles of magnets don't point to south poles of other magnets.

Than why does a north pole on a magnet point to the north pole of your magical RE?

Right, because it doesn't. It points to the southern rim of a FE. Thanks for pointing that out.

Actually north poles of magnets do point to the north pole.

If you’re going to try and spam to be funny, at least know what you are talking about.

So which is it? North poles point to north poles, or north poles repel north poles.

I guess it's easier to explain RE if you remain inconsistant. I prefer the consistant FE model.

Magnetic north poles point to the North Pole( where santa comes from).  Due you understand that?

How exactly are you (Narcberry) distinguishing between the north and south poles of your magnet?

Using a magnet that is labeled for extra convinience.

That's just the problem.  How do you think we establish which side to put the labels on?  The convention is to label the north facing side of a freely rotating magnet N, and the south facing side S.

There is nothing "North" about the N pole of a kitchen magnet, and there is nothing "South" about the S pole of a kitchen magnet.  They are just labeled that way because it is the direction they face when they are allowed to rotate freely.

All your experiment is doing is confirming that the manufacturers put the stickers on correctly.  You're not saying anything about the shape of the Earth.

I need to clarify here. The North Magnetic Pole of both models are the same. The "north" refers to the geographic, not magnetic polarity. The Earth's North Magnetic has south magnetic polarity. TheEngineer contributes to the confusion in the FAQ by referring to the poles, against scientific and geographic convention, by their polarity, not geography.

To recap:

Narcberry - Anything that I do not agree with is magical.

Gulliver - I don't have a fucking clue what's going on, but it's probably TheEngineer's fault.

Everyone Else - While I refer to Narc as a troll constantly, and bitch about "feeding the trolls", I feel the need to lash out at them to fufill my own desire to berate, even if it does give him satisfaction.

In conclusion, save the strawberries.

Alright let me explain, what you say doesn't prove anything. the north pole of a magnet would be attracted to the south pole of a magnet not because there is anything north or south about them but because they have opposit magnetic charges so therefore the south pole of a magnet would attach to the north pole of another magnet and vice virca. And if you labeled them wrong the north pole of one magnet might point towards the north pole of another magnet. Geography has nothing to do with it.

I don't mean to sound unkind but you are a college-educated adult or atleast a Highschool student right?
