Dionysios, I realize the topic has moved on a bit, but please dont take the "Christian" label, please at least use "Orthodox Christian" or something along those lines, because most people of the "Christian" religion are in opposition to your points of view

He will argue that people who take the opposite point of view are diverging from the true Chritian viewpoint as exemplified by his beleiefs. Which why in my opinion is patently false it is the only logical opinion he can have and still hold his beleifs.

Well wouldnt the general point of view of a religion be that which is agreed to by the majority of its believers, as Christianity has no leader in and of itself, Catholics have the Pope, but there is noone there for christianity in general.  At least, that is my opinion

I dont disagree. My point is that DIonysios believes that his views are the truie Christian views. If he didnt believe that he would not have those vies.
Its the point of view of most people regarding their religion (ie their religion is true wheras others while containing parts that are true are overall false)
Granted in the case of the Catholic Church that opinion is right but (okay I just proved my own point there sorry)

WoW, just WoW...

promoting illiteracy is one of the worst crimes against humanity that i can think of. I would rank it up there with gang rape and slavery. oppress ppl's minds...

the only good thing i can see coming from this is to strengthen the Church and family. and by proxy strengthen ppl's morals.

as i have stated before i'm atheist, so i don't actually believe the strengthening of the Church is a good thing; but i do believe the Church as a whole teaches good morals so i can still justify its existence.

If illiteracy was allowed to flourish, society would decay and we would be back to plowing our land by hand and burning witches @ the stake. only the elite would be knowledged and that elite would reign over everyone else. as others have stated, we would go back to the Middle Ages.

I don't know about you, but i don't want to wash my clothes down by the river. I don't want to eat food i had to slave in a field to grow.

due to the rampant spread of knowledge via literacy we have all of our modern day conveniences. we have advances in science, medicine, and technology. i'm discussing things with a man in Africa, half the planet away, and he is responding within seconds. how would this be possible with illiteracy was as rampant as wildfire?

Capitalism isn't perfect. Neither is Democracy. Corruption, i'm sure, abounds; but we will always have corruption. but if we are more knowledged then we have a better chance of fighting it. We can advance ourselves and take the corrupt mans place. how could we do that if only an elite were educated? with knowledge comes power. and ppl do not release power on their own accord.

If only the elite could read or write what chance do they have to better themselves? as it is now i have an opportunity to advance myself with public schools. i can dedicate myself and advance that knowledge further and in turn reap better benefits. take away that from the common man and we would be back to slavery before you know it.

I don't claim to know the answer to increasing family values. I don't' know how to strike the fear of God into ppl.

I do know taking the ability to read from the masses isn't going to help them read and study the Bible more often though.

I think family values should be taught @ home. I am a moral man even though i'm not a God fearing man. I'm still a good little boy even though i now know there is no Santa Claus. This was taught to me @ home, and i will take it to my grave. i don't see how illiteracy would help that @ all.

Oh come off it. The government is oppressing our minds all the time. At least with no written language they would have one less medium of oppression.

How would the absence of reading skills strengthen Church and family? And why would this be good even if it did happen?

As long as there is a scientific elite to make our TVs and cars for us, we will be fine.

Absence of reading would not destroy infrastructure. You don't need reading to understand how to create plumbing and food production.

You could talk on the telephone instead. By the way, it's likely that many of the so called "advances" in science are just government hoaxes.

disagree. you can research more using books and the Internet if you have the ability to read.

with a lack of knowledge Superstitions and religion would abound. "God made it happen" is an excellent answer for ignorant ppl.

and you are correct. a religion that is ingrained deeper doesn't actually facilitate a better or more moral common man.

Who is going to repair this technology? @ what cost will it come if only a few elite can produce/repair it?

Again. Who is going to make the tractor that plows your field? is every farmer going to be literate enough to fix his own tools? i'm from rural Alabama. tractors break. cars break. it saves untold amounts of money if you buy a book to learn how to fix whatever it is that has broken. not to mention the downtime saved.

we are discussing this issue using one of these "advances" right now. are you saying the Internet doesn't exist? my degree is in computer engineering. i am WELL aware of advances in technology.

I completly agree.
However somewhat ironically this is exactly why Dionysiso advocates illiteracy. He'd like us to return to the middle ages in terms of tech and society. He beleives industrialization is evil and that most modern science and medicine is rubbish.
Thus promoting illiteracy is consistent with his worldview.
A worldview which I disagree with in almost every conceivable way

I disagree with everything I have in me, with the original poster.

I suppose I shouldn't be coming to a forum made for people who think the world is flat to come upon logical arguments, but this is over the top.

The only thing I will say is, you would make an excellent orwellian dictator. You keep the masses stupid enough and they'll follow you, eh?

You disgust me.

Well that isnt a fair point to make.  If you were to live as the middle ages, you would die from starvation (no stores, and no middle age skill would function in the job market)

More importantly, I think, you wouldn't be able to propagate your message of primitivism to the rest of the world.  If you think it's more important to proselytize than to practice, then you proudly and nobly suffer the consequences.

being ablebodied andhaving someone "take care" of you is a disgrace, and is a disgrace to the middle-ages idea.

What I meant by suicide with dignity is basically youre condemning yourself to death because of your death, suicide with dignity, similar to martyrdom.

Quote from: "Dionysios"
Widespread literacy is a detriment to civilization.  I am not advocating total illiteracy.  An elite should be able to read.  Widespread illiteracy was a major component of all traditional civilzations including the early Christian, and this element was a major reason for their stability.  Correspondingly, widespread literacy is a contributor to the instability and decadence of modern civilization.
Industry is dependent upon widespread literacy.  This is the reason for support for schools because the common people need a basic albeit minimal understaning of language and math to be reliable base of labor for modern industry and civilization.  This is not only why corporations are all to willing to replace public schools, but also why education is so poor and why mass education by private corporations will not be any better but ultimately even lower quality than that of public schools.
The best and cheapest (for the taxpayers that is as opposed to the wealthy few) solution to schooling is to abolish most schools and replace them with absolutely nothing.  This will allow illiteracy to flourish.  If widespread illiteracy were accomplished on a world wide scale, it would destroy industrial civilization.  The vacuum would allow tradition to rise as people returned to the basics.  Life would be more natural and less robotic and secular.
Literacy is a major factor in distinguishing traditional civilization from the modern and why the former is superior to the latter.

- Dionysios
