How to turn the Earth into a black hole.
« on: August 10, 2007, 01:57:23 AM »
Step 1.  Obtain 1000 sq. miles of land.
Step 2.  Obtain 2.3 billion dollars.
Step 3.  Build Large Hadron Collider.
Step 4.  Turn power on.
Step 5.  Smash said hadrons together at 1,150 TeV.
Step 6.  Watch as black hole forms at the center of the Earth and envelops the planet!

I was listening to Coast to Coast AM last night (for you youngin's that have no idea what AM is, Coast to Coast is basically the radio version of this alternative science forum) and the guest was a scientist that claimed CERN and the LHC were in real danger of creating a stable black hole.

It is theorized that micro black holes can exist at the upper bounds of LHC's energy limit.  It is believed that these black holes would evaporate due to Hawking Radiation in short order, never getting the chance to reach the containment walls.

The scientist on the show said that his research showed that is the black hole does not evaporate in time, it will contact the containment walls, gaining mass and falling to the center of the earth eating up matter as it does.  Within a certain short time frame, it would grow and cause earthquakes that would destroy life on the planet, as it turned the earth into a black hole.  He is hoping to file a lawsuit against CERN to prevent them from turning on the LHC and thus making the earth a black hole.

Coast to Coast has um, strange, people on quite often, so I am not too sure what to make of this 'scientist'.  I'll do a little research later on on this guy and the subject.  If any of you would like to do a little reading on it, here's the guy's site:http://www.lhcdefense.org/.

Haha, I love the American way of stopping the apocalyspe "File a lawsuit against them"

Hopefully they'll remember to sue when Earth is a singularity

According to this study of potentially dangerous exotic objects which could possibly be created at the LHC, micro black holes are impossible (above the LHC's energy range) in four spacial dimensions. If there are additionaly compactified spacial dimensions as theorized by some, the creation of micro black holes is indeed possible according to LHC physicists. They claim, of course, that thermal radiation would evaporate these black holes before they could pose a threat. They also consider strangelets and magnetic monopoles, but conclude that none of the various theorized structures presents any threat.

The long and short of it is that according to their best known theoretical models and potentially plausible theoretical models, no threat exists. Of course, this is at the edge of our knowledge, so our theories are being constantly updated, and it is plausible that an error in our theories could hide a potential source of risk. You never know - I suppose we'd best be on the lookout for the antichrist, as he's sure to show up any day now.

You'd live for hundreds of years, too, what with time being stretched in proximity to a BH

It'd be so funny if stuff happening 1/2 in France managed to destroy the world.  After all that time of losing the fight, France is right in the middle of destroying the planet ;D

You forgot the last two, old chap.

Black Holes wont form. We've been smashing hadrons together for decades. And near the speed of light, no less! So what makes them think that black holes will form?

Even IF black holes would form, time dilation would instantly come into effect, exponentially related to size as well. The larger the black hole gets, the bigger the time dilation 'field' becomes. So it's possible that if one did manage to form and eat through the chamber walls, it would take years, decades, maybe even centuries before it would have any effect on the earth.

We've been smashing things together for years, but not at these energies.  The Large Hadron Collider is the most powerful atom smasher ever created.  Where we would talk about one or two TeV, now we are talking about a peta electron volts.  Black holes can exist at those energies.

Stuff appears to take an infinite amount of time to fall into a black hole, but it is quite finite in time.

Haven't I said black holes can be created in a particle accelerator before on this forum?

Point taken.

Relative frames. Remember that gravity (if you nit pick on this, I will castrate you with a rake) manipulates space-time, thus creating a time-dilation field. The field is proportional to size, so the larger the black hole gets, the larger the time-dilation field. If the black hole gets large enough, the time dilation field could distort time all over earth, thus shifting it out of sync with the rest of the universe as far as the flow of time. What might seem like years to us could be mere seconds, and it's entirely possible that mere seconds could pass in earths time field whereas the universe may be coming to an end outside the dilation field.

Just a fun thought, that's all.

Haven't I said black holes can be created in a particle accelerator before on this forum?

I think I remember that.

Coast to Coast is fun to listen to, but they give far too much airtime to fringe 'scientists' or pseudoscience making preposterous claims that are mysteriously supported by only their insights and 'research', which never prove to be accurate. This is the same program that brings on astrologers and takes them seriously, or allows Richard Hoagland to go on and on about his new theories on Mars. They do have good science on there from time to time, but a majority of it is conspiracies and nonsense.

As for this claim of turning the earth into a black hole, there's no possibility.

Actually there is possibility. It may not be possible for us yet, but it may be. We'll have to see when they fire up the PA.

I read something somewhere that said that if a blackhole were to form at the center of the Earth, absolutly nothing would happen. It's gravity would have no noticeable effect, and thus would not destroy the Earth. As for it gaining mass on the way down, no. It takes massive amounts of mass for a blackhole to get big enough to grow in size (to my knowledge, I am not on the cutting edge of blackhole theory, and thus my knowledge is not what it should be here).
I'm so tempted to put a scratch and sniff at the bottom of a pool and see what you do...

Avert your eyes, this is too awesome for them...

Actually another avenue of research in global warming has to deal with turning the earth into a black hole. This could happen as our atmosphere traps more and more photons from space, very literally making our planet heavier. Unless we go green, and soon, our earth could literally disappear!

It reminds me of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.  You can't know the Ultimate Question and the Ultimate Answer at the same time.  Of course in the books it's theorized that the Universe would be destroyed at that time, but a local annihilation of whatever race fully understands the Universe would make sense.

The scientists get lots of new data from using the accelerator, unaware of the micro black holes that 'escape'.  As they crunch the numbers the black holes grow.  The new data gives them enough information to understand how exactly the Universe works, but at the exact moment they understand it the black hole is big enough to destroy life on the planet, at least.  The secret of how the Universe works is safe, for now.
OMG!
