How come water swirls down the plughole the opposite way in australia, if the earth is flat? Surely such things should be uniform on a flat surface.

"The Coriolis force is so small, that it plays no role in determining the direction of rotation of a draining sink anymore than it does the direction of a spinning CD"

euhm, IT IS A PROVEN SCIENTIFIC FACT that the Coriolis force DOES NOT EXIST

Not exactly, it's been proven that it exists but it's so weak you won't see it's effects.

However, it's strong enough to affect larger events, such as whirlpools. Now this is proven. So, to modify the question, why do whirlpools rotate in one direction in one area of the Earth, and in another direction in a different area?

And if the coriolis force doesn't even effect that, here's another question, with a similar idea:

Why do hurricanes turn in opposite directions depending on the area of the world?

Presumably for the same incoherent reason that the constellations in the night sky rotate in the other direction in the southern hemisphere.

also to add to this discussion, hurricanes in the northern hemisphere allways rotate clockwise, and counter clockwise in the southern hemisphere. and i could tell you exactly why if you would like to know.

The coriolis force is almost non-existent on a recently-filled sink. However, wait a few days and the effects should be noticible.

It's not an incoherent reason, It's because the Earth, a sphere, is tilted on it's axis.

I'm pretty sure that a running assumption for the discussion of phenomena in this particular thread is that we are asking how said phenomena are possible if the Earth is flat.

I'm also pretty sure that a trivial effort or an iota of common sense on your part would have made that obvious.
