1. Shadow object between earth and moon
2. Light from sun refracted through Earth's atmosphere and reflected from the moon to produce the image we see.

Lol, it's a funny object.  It's only visible when it goes infront of the moon, it can't be detected, and it looks like a shadow during the only time you can see it.  There is zero evidence of it (other than it supposedly being infront of the moon) and it's in the book Earth: Not a Globe.  There might be more to it that I didn't think of.

Not true.  Sometimes it is seen and mistake n for the Tom Bishop bat signal.

When one observes the phases of the moon he is simply observing the moon's day and night, a natural shadow from the sun illuminating half of the moon at any one time.

The moon moves in a slow circular pattern around the hub of the earth similar to the sun. Therefore the shadow on the moon will change slightly from day to day, as the angle of the moon differs. At first quarter moon the celestial moon is hung overhead of the observer. This will illuminate approximately one half of the moon's surface; when the observer looks up he will see a shadow cutting the moon in half. As the moon moves westward, it becomes located at an angle to the observer whereas its phases will slowly modify, changing to a waxing gibbous.

I thought in FE theory the moon provided its own light (if that's not the case, why are both the sun and the moon referred to as having a spotlight effect?).  ???

My own theory, by the way, is that there are actually 28 different moons, nearly identical to each other except that each one is shaded slightly differently, from full to new.

Of course, it's the shadow object that blocks the moon during an eclipse.  It is unknown precisely why it is only visible when in front of the moon, and why it doesn't seem to block the stars as well.
