Gravitons... a discussion.
« on: July 11, 2007, 09:36:30 AM »
Earth: *creates a graviton without spending any energy*
Graviton: Why have you made me?
Earth: You are to travel into space, find something, then bring it back to me.
Graviton: But why will they listen to me?
Earth: You are a graviton, the ruler of the universe. They MUST listen to you!
Graviton: But what if I encounter troubles on my path?
Earth: You cannot, nothing can stop you. Nothing can alter you. Nothing can deter you, now go!

Graviton: *accelerates to an infinite speed, and half way to full speed, arives at something*

Moon: Well, hello there!
Graviton: Hello! You are to come with me.
Moon: But where are we headed?
Graviton: Back the way I came.
Moon: But you are a massless particle. How can we know where you came from?
Graviton: This is not important, just come.
Moon: I cannot move myself, I need energy to change my velocity.
Graviton: Use mine!
Moon: But you have none. You are massless, stateless and energyless. Whomever made you did so without spending energy, thus you have none.
Graviton: But I am ruler of the universe, you must do as I say!
Moon: But you're massless...
Graviton: so?
Moon: Well that means you don't exist.
Graviton: *poof*

So do you believe in virtual photons that mediate the EM force?

Oh, and if I understand the graviton theory (and I may not) tgravitons are theorized to travel at the speed of light.

Alright.  Rewrite the skit when you have taken a physics class that teaches General Relativity.

The fact remains, however, that there is a mutual attraction between all matter which you cannot dismiss as non-existent.

What I can't understand is the FE'ers obsession with gravitons.  Physicists aren't really as fixated as they used to be on gravitons as a description of gravity.  I'm sure there are physicists who still ascribe to the idea, but I have never met one who would seriously throw his weight behind the hypothesis of a force-carrying particle for gravity.

In fact, gravitons is still a very open theory, more a conjecture than anything. Scientists are probing possibilities at this stage, not asserting fact.
Still, humerous skit.

Before I die, i'm gonna turn this into a movie. Tom Cruise would be perfect for the role of the Graviton.

For one, what of the Pioneer anomaly?

To see other reasons why general relativity isn't "proven" look up Quintessence, dark matter, and "magical faeries that move stuff around simply to justify GR".

Also, there seems to be alot of study in alternatives to GR ( rel. MOND, etc) due to its "issues".

Course I guess we can ignore that, and call it "proven."

For one, what about it?

For two, you may need a refresher in how science works. GR has proven its worth. It's one of the most successfully tested theories ever. Yes, science still faces challenges, but I hope that you realize that we'll always have more to explain. I also hope that you'll realize that just because we can't explain sometime now, doesn't mean that GR is wrong. I suspect that you're confusing incomplete with wrong.

Edit: speaking of refreshers on how science works, things can be proven wrong - not right.
