This is an absurd argument you're making, Gulliver.  You're basing your argument on one very specific and apparently contentious definition of the word.  When the FEers say circumnavigation is possible on a flat earth they are saying a literal truth, and all you have are your ridiculous semantics to go on.

I think that any intelligent person would be able to understand that "circumnavigation" doesn't entail going around the globe on a flat earth.  As I said, that would be absurd since we're talking about a flat surfaceBut by the literal definition, circumnavigation is possible on a flat earth, so you're splitting hairs.

Nope. FEers hide behind the semantics all the time. I researched this carefully before writing the paragraph in the RE Primer. FEers abuse people all the time over this word. I even found back in 2005 where there was an agreement to use this type of word play. Do some research for yourself.

FEers hide behind the semantics all the time.

It's not 'hiding behind' semantics. It's stating things that are true. It's the whole reason I'm not on your side with this one, because you're trying to say that the dictionary must be wrong or something because it doesn't help you disprove an FE. If your statements or paragraphs were accurate in the Primer or even in this thread, I'd have nothing to debate about, and neither would Roundy.

Bullshit.  What do you mean "abuse people"?  Circumnavigation is possible on a flat earth.  It just is.  No wordplay necessary.

Really, what two antipodal points would you include in a circumnavigation of the the FE?

Well, by 'circumnavigate' being - "to sail or fly around; make the circuit of by navigation" and 'around' being most relevant as "in a circle" or "in a circular or rounded course"; it could be any number of points on a flat Earth. If you're referring to something else, you'll have to be more specific.

Really? How do you sail around the FE and not go around the edge? Do you just go around part of it and call that good enough? In that case, I could circumnavigate the world and never leave my living room, couldn't I? Look everybody! I just circumnavigated the world six time in the last minute--a new world record. Somebody call Guinness!

I think you should have put your whole post in blue, unless you really don't understand those definitions and how they are applicable to your question.

How do you sail around the FE and not go around the edge? Do you just go around part of it and call that good enough?

Completing the circuit; going in a circle; traveling a circular course.

In that case, I could circumnavigate the world and never leave my living room, couldn't I?

By the definitions, yes.

As I said, if you mean something else, you'll have to be more specific.

Fine by me. You've demonstrated just how absurd applying that definition in that way is. Thanks.

And you've just demonstrated the fine act of expressing an opinion, not a fact. Thanks.

Okay, so you might have a point there.  Certainly it can be argued that circumnavigation is possible, but it would really involve going around small circles or the equator (or just touch on two antipodes along these circles) to fit the technical definition.  Still, the term is used by the FEers to demonstrate that something which seems impossible on a flat earth is possible, and using the same term when describing the same exact situation actually makes sense.  It's still not a word game, and there's certainly nothing abusive about it  ::), it's a way to make what they're describing clear to the people who visit this site, and most people really just don't split hairs about it like you're doing, Gulliver.  And anyway, by your second ("more relaxed", but apparently still valid) definition of circumnavigation, it's still possible on a flat earth without taking any liberties with the language.  :P

Gracious of you. Thanks. I'll surely consider earnestly any revision to the RE Primer that you or divito have.

I think everytime you lot argue about the definition of circumnavigation and I read it, I die a little. Gully don't complain about word games if you're going to play them as well.

Heh, I'm not playing a word game. I'm refusing to enable FEers to make up a definition and not tell us they're doing it. It's not fair of FEers, and I'll point it out every time.
