Why can't I see the southern cross? I live on lattitude line 47, ~500 feet above MSL, in the northern hemisphere of planet earth.

(Their, I made the question straight forward, detailed and easy to understand for the FE folks.)

ANSWER MY GODDAMN QUESTION TOM!

P.S. Incase you can't take a hint: I know that I cannot see the southern cross because it is below the horizon. But I'm sure their is a reason for this even if the earth is flat. It's a good thing I dont live on the other side of the world or I would look north to see the souther cross if the earth were flat.

Hey, Rentacow.. they are using the usual FE bull hockey.. better watch out :]

No, but really. these guys will never give you a piece of proof for their theories. They ALWAYS claim conspiracy and will almost never answer questions directly. its always.. "did you read the FAQ?"

I think its quite ammusing actually..

The declination of the stars as an observer travels north or south is a matter of perception. From Chapter 14, section 6 of Earth Not a Globe:

"Another phenomenon supposed to prove rotundity, is thought to be the fact that Polaris, or the north polar star sinks to the horizon as the traveller approaches the equator, on passing which it becomes invisible. This is a conclusion fully as premature and illogical as that involved in the several cases already alluded to. It is an ordinary effect of perspective for an object to appear lower and lower as the observer goes farther and farther away from it. Let any one try the experiment of looking at a light-house, church spire, monument, gas lamp, or other elevated object, from a distance of only a few yards, and notice the angle at which it is observed. On going farther away, the angle under which it is seen will diminish, and the object will appear lower and lower as the distance of the observer increases, until, at a certain point, the line of sight to the object, and the apparently uprising surface of the earth upon or over which it stands, will converge to the angle which constitutes the "vanishing point" or the horizon; beyond which it will be invisible.

What can be more common than the observation that, standing at one end of a long row of lamp-posts, those nearest to us seem to be the highest; and those farthest away the lowest; whilst, as we move along towards the opposite end of the series, those which we approach seem to get higher, and those we are leaving behind appear to gradually become lower.

This lowering of the pole star as we recede southwards; and the rising of the stars in the south as we approach them, is the necessary result of the everywhere visible law of perspective operating between the eye-line of the observer, the object observed, and the plane surface upon which he stands; and has no connection with or relation whatever to the supposed rotundity of the earth."

Therefore, stars will continue to descend when one travels North or South until they disappear past the vanishing point.

Still wrong. There would be distortion of the constellations as the stars moved across the sky if this were true. It's just the idle wanderings of a poor scientist.

Stars stay in one formation, they won't move. If earth was flat, you could see every star formation if you look to sky.
heories of flat earth is irrevelant.

True, the perspective effect would effectively squash the stars near the horizon, instead of have the horizon cut them off.  Look at any pattern on a ceiling and watch as the squares above your head become squashed trapezoids in the distance.

if the sun gets farther away causing sunsets etc, why do constellations and plenetary nebluae move accross the sky at night as well?  ::)

at what height is the stars?

they have to be really near the earth for rombottoms theory to work

Yet dispite the distance of the object, neighbouring galaxies being the farthest, they all move accross the sky at the same rate? by you people's logic, the closer it is the faster it would seem to move.

They wont give you a straight answer. and that is an excellent point SparteX. stars move in a pentagonal pattern throughout the year, but I'm sure the FEers will simply say that the FE rotates in that same pattern, which produces the "illusion" of movement.

Why can't I see the southern cross? I live on lattitude line 47, ~500 feet above MSL, in the northern hemisphere of planet earth.

(Their, I made the question straight forward, detailed and easy to understand for the FE folks.)

Mr. Rentacow, use "search" first and you'll save yourself a lot of effort. The advanced search may be required.  The question has been posed numerous times.

People tell you to look it up for several reasons;

The answer may be on the forum, having been discussed by many many people.

They may think the answer is somewhere, but it is not.

They are lazy.

They know full weell that you haven't looked for the answers you've just posted this piecee of crap thread.

you see, the problem with that logic, is that the answers are no where to be found. I (who have looked in various threads), have asked repatedly from numberous people to just give one piece of actual evidence to support the insane idea of a flat earth and have received none. people either ask you to go look it up, and when they realize that there isnt any anywhere, they give you reasons why they shouldnt give it to you. It has nothing to do with them being lazy, its just a bit difficult for them to come up with evidence that doesnt exist. sorry to break it to you, but your wrong.

Well no, I'm right. You're just ignorant.

However most of the time the info is not an 'answer', it is a debate where either a) we let it die because it was clogged up with people going "you're all crazy I have seen a launch dumbo" or b) it's an unfinished debate. ie, we never reached an answer. There is c); the debate was finished. Usually because noone can explain it in the FE universe so RE wins the point. Although occasionally us Round Earthers find ourselves out matched.
