So if the Earth is flat...
« on: June 13, 2007, 05:59:44 PM »
Hi,

I' didn't realise that the theory that the Earth is flat was still going and I was wondering whether this extends to all planets or just ours? I am always open to ideas and theories (don't get me started on evolution - it involves aliens (!) - but, do you believe that the universe is flat too? Because I have it on good authority that the universe it a string shape and is beige!

Cheers,
Tom.

It's commonly thought that only the earth is flat, as it's super special (because it has life and stuff, unlike all those other planets).  Not sure about the universe.  FE'ers are trying to get the earth figured out, let alone the entire universe.

Thanks for the response, but I still can't get my head around this theory. I understood it when there were sea-farers with no maps and all they had were rations and a lot of guts, but surely now, there can't be any reason to believe that the Earth is flat? I mean, each to their own, but what's the motivation? Why refuse to believe what has been scientifically proven?

I don't always want to accept what scientists say, and I don't a lot of the time, but surely this is one of the most fundamental laws of physics?

Totally intriguing!

Cheers,
Tom.

A FE'er response:

The motivation is the truth.  Where's your scientific proof?  Your experiments, where are they so they can be duplicated?

Or at least something close to ^^.

I agree that just because the fact it can't be proved by any scientific 'standard', the evidence that the Earth is a sphere is overwhelming beyond any evidence that it is flat. As I said before, I am willing to believe many things, but I am still to be convinced by this this theory. And that is all anything can be at this moment in time  - a theory. One question though... how come when you fly on a plane at 35,000ft the Earth looks curved?

Cheers,
Tom.

You have now commited debate suicide on these forums.  The curvature of the earth is not visible until 60 000ft.

Oops! Sorry!

You know what I mean though! But you just admitted that there IS a curvature of the Earth! Or will you explain that it's just a illusion?

Tom.

Mr. Ireland has always and forever admitted that the earth is curved.  He doesn't admit to being Irish, though.

Oh, I know there's a curvature, with a round earth and all ::)  Yea, I understand, I did the same thing but worse when I joined the forums.  I think it's explained as an illusion, from Snell's Law.

I'm not Irish!  I'm Canadian!

Hello Mrs. More,

I'm not trying to stir, just understand. I'm in the UK so now it's 2.36 in the morning and i've got to get some sleep. Being the Prime Minister, it's hard to rest. Only joking! I'm just the deputy prime minister.

Love,
Tom

If you're in Canterbury, I advise against sleeping unless your door is locked, St. Thomas.
