Yeah, it's kind of like when people were comitting suicide because they thought that Alice Cooper was telling them to. I mean, come on...
I don't think it's a mental illness of any sort at all, and as I've said, I speak from experience in Everquest. Often, though, you find that your life in the game is far more interesting and far BETTER--and free of most problems which plauge you--than real life, and therein lies the problem. Basically, a pathetic loser starts playing the game, find that they all of a sudden have an entourage of companions, a hot-looking mount (equivalent of a convertible), and a ton of money. Which life is easier to choose? The latter, I assure you, is much easier to choose. It's not a mental illness nor an addiction, it's just the fact that people like to hide from their problems rather than facing them, and that's what happens, except to a far larger degree in this case.
The same thing happened in Everquest, though. I knew people who simply would not sleep and would barely even get up. He would continually run instances with me, with no breaks, just over and over and over. He got light-headed once and he had to call a friend of his to come and feed him because he couldn't move very well and didn't have the strength to get himself food. It happens. It's stupid. But it's easy to take the short route, and online games are a very short route, and allow you to easily forget problems.
And it's all a matter of willpower, honestly. I'm awful with hiding from my problems--I do it all of the time. But I don't get "addicted" to online games (anymore), even though I play them. But I find that I like my life, and I like how it goes. People that wallow in their own self-pity are those who get "addicted" to these games, and so be it. If they're too stupid to actually get up and feed themselves and instead turn into a turtle in their little shell, why should we try to help them? Natural selection is still in order: If you can't get food...
Wait for this shocker...
YOU DIE! It's what happens. Sorry. That's how life works.
