Why does the hull of a ship disappear over the horizon before the mast does?

if the earth is flat they should both dissapear at the same time, at the distance the eye can see...

This has been gone over 1000's of times.  Neither of us have it memorized, so use the search function (or the FAQ) and find it.

like I said i tried the search feature couldnt find my answer, a link would help if you know it.

Uhhm, yea, that's called searching.  Then you scan through until you find something that looks like what you're looking for.

It's due to refraction of light in the atmolayer and total internal reflection, effects that also cause mirages.

I can't decide if this site is a hoax or if the people running it are sincere.  I can't see much point in posting anything here. No one is going to be converted and the posts get increasingly vitriolic. A lot of heat gets generated, but no light.

Is there anything more up to date than Rowbotham's book? His 3rd edition was published in 1872. Has no-one repeated his experiments or devised new ones?

It will take more than telling me that I'm brainwashed, and that the Round Earth is an international conspiracy, to convince me.

This site (just the forums here) is not a hoax.  Tom says he repeated some experiments in the book, and found the same results.
