I too have seen satellites with the naked eye.  I guess the FES-related question is, are these really satellites, or are they helium balloons, or something planted there by the Conspiracy to look like satellites?  Because really, to the naked eye, they're nothing more than blinking lights in the sky.

my father remembers watching Sputnik go by in 1957, he said it was just like a faint star moving across the night sky.
Your father must have some damn good eyes.

I honestly thought I had heard stories about Sputnik being visible to the naked eye.  Apparently I'm right, but it's just one of those things that people aren't remembering correctly.  Here's a page with a possible explanation:

http://www.satobs.org/seesat/Aug-1997/0473.html

To quote:
Quote
It is unlikely that it would have been seen by the unaided eye. However it was
accompanied into orbit by its last stage rocket - quoted as being 28 metres
long,
which would have been very visible to the naked eye, and is therefore a likely
candidate for what the public remember as having seen.

Sputnik itself was still visible with a simple pair of binoculars, but would have looked like the faintest star in the sky, according to another reference I found.

Weak sauce people.  One can see the light from satellites at night.

To the OP:

I've flown on commercial airlines many times and never seen the Earth's curvature (as you can imagine, I have specifically looked for it instead of giving a cursory glance).

Incidentally though, that the Earth appears flat from an aeroplane is neither here nor there - even if the Earth was round, the curvature would still not be visible (the average passenger plane flies at 40000 feet - the diameter of the Earth in RET is around 8000 miles).

wait, here we go.....read the paragraph titled "mission" of this wiki page. It mentions about the visibility of the satellite and its rocket booster, which also achieved orbit. What my dad, and millions of other people around the world, actually saw was most likely the rocket booster, which was much more visible than the basketball sized satellite

Then surely you should have said he saw the rocket booster?
