Night Sky
« on: April 12, 2007, 07:38:53 AM »
How come I can not see the North Star (Polaris) on the night sky from places that are south from the Equator, but I can see it from places North from it?

The Polaris is easily recognized on the Night Sky because it is one of the stars in the constellation Ursa Minor. So, you can not say that it does not exist because the whole sky looks differently from places north and south from the Equator? Why is that?

because it's two-dimensional. from the northern "hemisphere" we see it straight-on, but from the south we see it from the side. because it's only about 30 miles away, this is significantly close that seeing the "disc" from the side means we see just another boring ellipse.

which of course poses another question.

why is everything in the sky a circle from all angles? if the south pole folk can see a round object in the sky, like, oh, i don't know, the sun, why don't i see an elliptical sun? or moon? or any star or planet?

in conclusion, polaris is a magic star with mythical disappearing properties.

But, that's not the problem. When I am 60 miles north of the Equator I can see it above the horizon, but when I am 60 miles south, I can't see it. Surely these 120 miles don't make that much difference in the viewing angle?!

Polaris or the North Star is nearly directly above the North Pole (it's actually about 1 degree away from the celestial pole). You might think that with all of the stars in the sky, it shouldn't be that unusual for a given star to rest above the pole, but really, it's an extremely unlikely occurrence. It's even more unlikely that our pole star would be relatively bright - second order magnitude. If you divided the night sky into squares that are one degree latitude by one degree longitude in size, there would be 41,253 square degrees in our night sky. There are approximately 2,000 stars that we can see on the clearest night, and perhaps 6,000 different stars are visible to us throughout the year, but only 50 of these are as bright or brighter than Polaris. The chances of a star like Polaris occupying a place over the pole are about slim ,about 1 in 1,000. Nevertheless, Polaris defies the odds and has become our guiding light.
Inhabitants of the Southern Hemisphere can't see Polaris.

No no Read Fecals quote at the bottom,
You realize that it looks like that You are having a conversation with yourself right now. Fecals tried to tell them but they wouldnt listen.  :o And just to clear up the mistake of Fecals name: feck·le(fekl)
n.
A small brownish spot on the skin, often turning darker or increasing in number upon exposure to the sun.
tr. & intr.v. reck·led, feck·ling, feck·les
To dot or become dotted with feckles or spots of color.

[From Middle English fekles, feckles, alteration of feknes, probably of Scandinavian origin; akin to Old Icelandic freknttr, feckly.

it's magical, of course. it's like the sun that magically only points downwards, polaris magically points its beams only at the northern "hemisphere"

why is it almost directly overhead at the north pole, yet nearly at the horizon when close to the equator?

...it's a conspiracy. the government controls the stars. they're actually little christmas lights that dubya can flick on and off with a light switch.
