Why believe?
« on: February 27, 2007, 08:51:17 AM »
Q: "Why do you guys believe the Earth is flat?"

A:  Well, it looks that way up close.  Also, Samuel Rowbotham et al. performed a variety of experiments over a period of several years that show it must be flat.  They are all explained in his book, which is linked at the top of this article.

So your beliefs are based on "Well, it looks that way up close" and from a book written in 1881?
You know, some major discoveries have been done since then.

Seriously though, Is this IT? Is this what you guys(FEer's) have to based your theories on a flat world?

How old were you when you first learnt the shape of the earth? Did you believe the teacher when they told you?

I can't remember, it was when I was very young. I think I learnt about the earth being round in primary school.

When did you learn it?

I don't understand why you guys make a big deal about a book being written in 1800's when all of your modern science is based on a book from the 1600's.

I asked when did you learn the earth was not round. And why did you believe... because that's what you were told?

When did I learn? When I was 7, I flew on a plane over to South America from California...

what do you consider 'modern science' then? wooden sail boats? .... modern science, is cloning, internet, bluetooth... and yes... round planets.

Modern science is based on the simple equation, f=m*a.

No, you asked how old I was when I thought it wasn't round. As I said, I was very young. I never learnt that the earth was flat, I was taught that the earth is round.

Did you see the curvature of the earth and that's why you believe the earth is round?

Of course theories will build on each other. You can't reach the stars from the ground, you need to build a tower first.

Personally? I learned it was round in kindergarten. Everything I've seen and learned since then supports that. I never take anything at face value. It's a personality quirk.
Monochrome morality, almost as much a misnomer as the ridiculous prejudices that it is oft based.

not exactly. Not everything is based on mass and acceleration. Dont try to change the subject.

Is this directed at me? Because I did answer it to the best of my ability. In the meantime whenever I ask a question you seem to ignore it for some odd reason.

Did you see the curvature of the earth when you were 7 in that fateful plane trip from California to somewhere on the continent of South America and is that why you believe the earth is round?

why did you believe the world is flat? because someone told you?

I don't think I really had thought about the shape of the world until we learnt about it in school.

I don't believe the earth is flat because somebody told me, no.

then why? Is it because you read it on a book from 1881? Or because you want to be different?

I'm having trouble answering your question. You're making too many assumptions about me.

I don't believe in FET because of a book from 1881.

I don't believe in FET because I want to be different.

It's a simple question that is simply misguided.

Read back over this thread, read through some of my posts, have a look at the link in my signature, have a look at my avatar and by then (hopefully) you'll realise the assumption you made and why I can't answer your question.

I dont have to do that. I know the assumption I made from you. It's simply that you believe what people tell you. and someone told you the earth was flat... so you decided to be different.

Hey, its fine to be different... I believe in Aliens, why? I can answer that easily... because if the universe is infinite... then there just has to be something outhere.

Now why can't you answer the question... I made this thread to ask "why to believe" and a believer can't answer it....

I can be convinced that the earth is flat... with enough evidence and proof... but you're not exactly helping.

well i believe the earth is round simply because ive grown to be used to it, but really who cares what shape the earth is, it hasnt affected us yet, physically

but i do have some information, the lear jets that were used to fly people at amazing speeds commercially were said to go so fast that YOU COULD SEE THE CURVITURE OF  THE EARTH!!

i will find and cite this information if you want me to, but i really dont care, just a thought that came in my head

I don't believe what people tell me for no reason at all. I don't think anybody ever told me the world was flat before I got to this website. I didn't believe any of the people from this website when they told me it was flat. I also happen to be quite indifferent when it comes to the shape of the earth.

You are still not realising the assumption you've made. You even wrote out the assumption later on...

Hey, its fine to be different... I believe in Aliens, why? I can answer that easily... because if the universe is infinite... then there just has to be something outhere.

Or are you now going to prove to me now that I dont know what my brain is thinking?
