Obviously, he doesn't know, or else it wouldn't be called "Shadow Object".
It's just what they call the thing that makes a shadow on the moon, but they don't know WHAT it is.

Of course, it could just be the earth's shadow...

It is not the Earth's Shadow, it states clearly in FE literature that the shadow object is in fact a celestial body that is above us and moving almost in sync with the moon.
