I just dropped my pen.  There you go, proof of acceleration.

You're welcome.

I've read the FAQ and seen the argument made several times here that the earth is flat and accelerating upwards.

I've also seen it stated that the earth will never reach the speed of light.

Aren't these two statements contradictory?  If the earth is always accelerating, won't it eventually reach the speed of light, as that is a fixed set speed, not an infinitum?

And if the answer truly is no, what happens as the earth's acceleration approaches light speed?  Will it slow to a stop?  Will the effect of "gravity" then disappear?

Gravity=acceleration.

Its so easy to defend yourself when you provide no evidence. Prove it by testing many different locations on the Earth, publish the information, then do the tests again.

No, as relativtity prevents it.

No, as acceleration is relative, we won't ever feel it to be any different, but someone not on the earth will see the acceleration decrease.

gravity accelerates objects at 9.8m/s2.  if we were constantly accelerating, we would eventually reach light speed.  take a car traveling at 40mph, if it were accelerating at 9.8m/s2 and continued to accelerate, it would reach light speed.  please explain how your thing of relativity equivlance covalent hypothesis theory cos sin tan physics thing works.  thanks poopie

Velocity does not add linearly.  It appears to do so when speeds are very slow compared to c.  The actual formula for adding velocity is:

w = (u+v)/(1+uv/c^2)

What is acceleration?  Think about the units of acceleration.

So the effects of gravity are not caused by acceleration, but by centrifugal force?  Or am I reading that incorrectly?
It seems that you are stating that the flat earth's trajectory is curved, and that's why it will never reach light speed.

It still seems that an indefinitely accelerating object has to eventually reach a certain rate of speed.

Its possibily curved in 4 dimensions.

I'm an REer but in all fairness to FEers einsteins relativity helps here with time dialation as the velocity increases.

Wow, did you miss the mark.

Acceleration is a rate of change of velocity, or m/s/s or m/s^2.  So for each second, the velocity increases by  x m/s.

So in the above equation, take:

u=current velocity
v=additional velocity
w=new velocity

Plug w into u in the successive calculations.

Its not velocity, the shadow object makes you think you are moving but you are not.

Moobs, that equation assumes that time is a constant.  Einstien proved this wrong.  Your formula is only applicable at low speeds.  The speeds that the planet is traveling the time dialiation must be taken into account.

Is there any way to put it into terms that don't involve equations, for those of us to whom they mean nothing?

What happens as the earth approaches the speed of light that prevents it from ever getting there?

Einstien proved that if you were doing a speed of say half the speed of light and someone from your origin turn on a beam of light to go past you, this beam of light would still appear to pass you at the full speed of light (and not at half the speed of light like most people intiuitly thought).

Relitive speed is like when your on the highway driving at 100 and someone passes you at 110. To you its the same as if you were at a stand still and they drove past at 10.  When it comes to light, light always passes you at the speed of light regardless of your speed.  This could only be accounted for if time dialates.

So if you blasted off from the earth and went at speeds around maybe half the speed of light, did 1 big circle and came back to earth.  To what seemed like hours to you were actually a 100 years to the earth.  Einstien labeled this his theory of relativity (there is more to it then just this part)
