The Sun's light is also distorted by the atmosphere. You'll notice that it never appears as a perfect circle in the sky.

Anyway, it doesn't matter, as that little distortion isn't nearly enough to explain the light being sent in that much of an ovoid shape.  The sun clearly has to be so far north or south that it would be extremely noticeable (especially at the equator).  And, even if optical illusion caused the sun to appear directly overhead when it was that far north or south, that still doesn't explain how the lensing would occur at an angle.  And there's still the issue of the southern hemidisk receiving much less heat-causing light proportional to the surface area and yet remaining approximately the same temperature when you correct for seasonal changes.
