It's an investment scam.

There are two scams going on here. One is the faking of space travel which we usually talk about.

The other scam going on is by these private companies who, since the 1940's, have promised to send tourists into space/capture an asteroid/create a reality show on mars/etc., and then after an appropriate amount of time in "R&D" they suddenly fold with all of their investor's money.

so my question is.

Dennis Tito has been to space in 2001 becoming the 1st tourist to do so. so if the earth is flat then by extension he must know space travel is a hoax.
so,why is he investing 66 million dollars of his own money into an event he knows is impossible. also how is he going to convince paying  private companies, each that are experts in the field they operate in, that he is pulling this of when in fact it will all be a hoax according to FE.

I still feel like you are trying to bait us into arguing about something that hasn't happened yet, unless he's actually started working on the project.  As it is, this is a thread about some eccentric old billionaire's crazy flight of fancy.  Eccentric old billionaires have crazy flights of fancy all the time.

Honestly, does this guy look entirely sane to you?

He looks like a child who has just been told by his parents that for doing so well at the piano recital he can have McDonald's for dinner tonight.

Now I of course do not believe the Conspiracy is a necessary condition for a flat Earth.  So any speculation on my part about why he would do such a thing, assuming he would do such a thing, would be pretty idle.  I wouldn't hesitate to suggest in the spirit of the moment that a slumping NASA could be trying to use something like this to revitalize the public's interest in space travel, as we may deduce they have already (unsuccessfully) attempted with Richard Branson's crazy flights of fancy.

I would also add to this wild story I've concocted at your demand in an attempt to refute a thus-far imaginary scenario that as a former rocket scientist, it's entirely possible that Tito was no stranger to the Conspiracy even before he allegedly went into space.

i understand where your coming from in the fact it hasn't happen yet and even i admit may not happen as well. but the key difference is he says himself he is investing vast sums of money $66million i believe with no intention of making any return on it. im sure investors will have refund clauses if no mission takes place and he says in the interview he will be a lot poorer for this mission.

and in regards to virgin galactic iv already mentioned before that all ticket deposits made have to be refunded in no ride is given. some already have. hence no money made if no space flight takes place.

Looks like they're doing a flyby and not landing.  My money's still on Dr. Zubrin.  As far as the guy to watch.  He wants to start a Mars colony.

Whoa man, I'm going to need some proof on that. Dr. Nor claims to be some sort of physicist and I'd like to see some credentials before I'm likely to believe that he's what he says, and the same for you.

He was talking about Tito, not himself.

Really, no money made?  Do you think that money is simply collecting dust in a safe in Richard Branson's house?

its reported that 500 people have put deposits down for tickets at $20,000 so that's $10,000,000. but that money will need to be returned at some point in the future if no flights are given.  no Richard Branson has a net worth of £3.4 Billion

in a interview richard branson has done he gives rough estimates of how much money his company has invested to get to where it is today

http://www.space.com/16831-virgin-galactic-qanda-branson-whitesides.html
SPACE.com: Aabar Investments is investing $110 million into LauncherOne. How much are you putting in?

Branson: We’ve put in a lot of money, in total — in the $2 [hundred million]-$300 million range, something like that

so he needs to do some realy good investing with that 10 million to even break even let alone make a profit.
and scaled composites  has spent a awful lot of money designing space ship 2
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpaceShipTwo
SpaceShipTwo's total development costs were estimated at around $400 million in May 2011, a significant increase over the 2007 estimate of $108 million

im not sure where the money is being made out of 10 million in deposits that have to be given back with all these outgoings to cover.

Even if it were possible to travel to Mars, this seems like an extraordinary waste of money.

I agree.  Go big or go home.

And in this case it should be "Go big or stay home"

They should live on Mars.  Not come back.

Kickstarter would be INSANE. Can you imagine? "Help support the first inter-planetary family."

They'd get probably billions of dollars to start a colony there.

Really?  Would you donate money to someone claiming that they were going to go live on Mars?  Because I wouldn't.

Considering space travel is badass, yes, yes I would.

I wouldn't donate money to a fly-by though.  I would only donate money if they are planning on living on Mars. Just like Dr. Zubrin.  He's got the right idea.
