 Hi Guys,Chookrooter here*.

This is my first post,so please be gentle as I feel my way around this  fascinating site.

 Makes a sound?

Sound is how we interpret some vibrations. A falling tree will still create the same vibrations, which will be interpreted as sound only if there is a creature present who interprets such vibrations in that way. Not all creatures do. (snakes for example)

*not my real name, which is "Tarquin St John Shagnasty" (pronounced Tar-kwin Sin-jin Shaw-ness-ee).My family is originally from County Clare.  Not to be confused with the Sh'gn'sty  clan of county Armagh (pronounced "shag-narstee) who are a bunch of sheep molestors of ENGLISH ancestry..

Yes but even if there was no one in the forest to hear it there would be many animals around to hear it.
You can't outrun death forever
But you can sure make the old bastard work for it.

I notice my moon/sun comment went unnoticed.

If the moon and sun are both at 3000 miles from earth, shouldn't they collide during a solar eclipse?

Indeed......and would anyone be around to hear it? Apparently, in space no-one can hear you scream.

This is actually a philosophical question taken from epistemology. It can be used to address the opposition between rationalism (knowledge from reason) and empiricism (knowledge from senses). According to the rationalist, we know the fallen tree will make a sound by just thinking about it; the rationalist says the objective reality exists independent of our senses (e.g. the apple is still in front of you even if you're blind), and thus it is logical possible that it did make a sound. According to the empiricist, we never know until an observer receives the sound through one of his or her five senses; the empiricist says reasons alone only tell us definition and nothing about the real world (e.g. by definition, all bachelors are unmarried, but so what?). To me, Plato was wrong that "all knowledge comes from reason," since we do have to use our senses to know something as true or false; we have to use both reason and sensory experience to gain knowledge. Pure rationalism is unrealistic and illusionary, while pure empiricism is subjective and deceiving.

Of course, with the clash between rationalism and empiricism, the question still remains unanswered, "Do we know anything?" And that just goes back to the original question in this thread.

ye i think it does, i mean for starters what forest doesnt have anything living in it? there is always something. second every tree makes a sound when it falls unless of course you are deaf, so the answer to that is yes a tree does make a sound unless everything is dead and the only things left are deaf.

Yes. Of course it makes a sound. I will prove this by have a tape recorder in the woods while no one is around and put some det cord around the tree so it will fall at a specific time.
Sound: a vibration through a medium.

The very first reply was right. How did this thread get to seven pages?!

A sound is a vibration. Trying to say a vibration does not occur just because someone is not there is ridiculous.
Volcanoes are caused by the Conspiracy commisioning Goverment Agents to use photoshop hax on the core of a volcano, causing it to erupt when dark matter collides with it (resulting in emissions of bendy light).

You didn't pick up on the ramifications of the real questions being asked. If you look at the question from a straightforward perspective, then yes that first answer was correct.
If I was asked to imagine a perfect deity, I would never invent one that suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Christians get points for originality there.

Fair enough, but bear in mind that there are reasons why that question is famous.
