I have an idea....
« on: October 05, 2008, 08:28:30 PM »
OK so I've thought of an experiment that could prove this one way or the other. According to the FE mumbo jumbo we can't see real far because of the atmosphere. Well that means that there is a maximum distance we would be able to see.

So here's what we need: a ship/boat/something that will float, binoculars or something and a big tower with ocean views.

And here's what we do. We stand on the shore (so as to be at sea level) and send the ship out to the horizon. From there we go up our big tower and, using the ship as a reference point, see how far we can see. According to the FE theory we shouldn't see as far (since the line of sight to the ship would now be longer), and by RE we should see further (think of it as seeing further around the earth because of your elevation).

And that's it. Now, fly my pretties! Fly!

You've not given this nearly as much thought as you expect us to.

Sorry, the earth is flat, and it's as obvious as a giant flat earth stuck to your feet.

In before the mocking and inevitable lock.

Edit:  well, in before the lock at least.  Curses Narcberry.

Why would it be locked? It's not like I violated any terms of use or anything.

Topic is likely to be spammed or ignored. If spammed, lock is possible.

Search the forums, this is not a new idea.

you will find out that many of the last posts in threads are: "Read the FAQ"
and then it is locked forever, without saying what you should look for in the FAQ or what you did to get locked.

happened to me several times :D

Well on the bright side it's not as dumb as it sounds then.

well, it can't get too near shore, at least not in the Gulf of Mexico.  I can verify that I can see higher from the top of the "tower" than I can from the deck.  From the deck (23 meters/76 feet) I can see large ships and platforms out to around 18 nautical miles (nm).  From the top of the derrick (92 meters/300 feet) on a clear day, you can see ships and platforms out to easily 30 nm.
