That teleportation video is someone's attempt at special effects. It's pretty convincing too, in terms of it's hard to see where the video is cut and pasted.

I, being of psychic type, anticipated your post and responded in the past  ;D

Actually I have no idea why that happened...

BTW, has anyone seen the teleportation seen on Spaceballs? I'm not being teleported after that!

I just tried to do that experiment with an egg... I had to clean it up. It didn't teleport!

I agree...how would we be able to preserve ourself? It's murder.

You know, I read some book that had time travel/teleportation, and it's a very good point.  However, I think that it wouldn't be a big problem.  We and our consciousnesses are really only defined by the specific way all the neurons in our brains are set up.  So, even though "you" would die, another "you" would be alive, and for all intents and purposes it still would be you - not just to other people, but to the new you as well.  I don't think I really explained what I'm trying to get across, but basically, it's not a problem because you would continue living to the new you and to those around you.

Yea but the thing is the "old" you would be dead and who knows what happens to the "old" you's conciousness when the "new" you takes over your body... does the "old" you take a passengers seat or just fades?

Isn't this what Locke talked about?

To be honest, I don't think feeling how it is to teleport is possible. If we are turned into photons, and reassemble into fermions again, the stream of consciousness would be halted, and it would be as if we were a new person. The others wouldn't realise the difference, but our old self would be "dead". Maybe it's speculation, but that's how it seems to me.

Our "self" dies all the time, according to the Buddhists.  At every moment we are new people.  Personality or self is a nominal entity, like that possessed by the Philadelphia Phillies; it consists of many interacting and sometimes contrary subparts that don't really cohere, that have no center.

Teleporting probably just feels like this.  Like how we are right now, as people bouncing from one thing to another.  As long as the neurons and whatnot are perfectly copied, one is the same person that one has always thought.  Said person has the same memories and thinks the same way.

Have you seen The Prestige

If you teleport, you would be effectively creating a copy of yourself. The copy would think it was the original you, would have the same memories as the original you, but it would not be the original you. It would basically be a clone, with the same mentality. The original you would be "dead", but the copy of you would live on. If the original you was left alive, we would have cloning. It's as simple as that.

What if the teleporter takes you piece by piece afew quadrillion times.  Then you would still be the same you.

Wouldn't you, like, die?

I don't mean "you", I mean both the current you and the teleported you.

NM, I get it.
If the teleporter took you apart faster than you could regenerate the damage, then the original you would die. If you could regenerate the damage faster than the teleporter could take you apart, then it would effectively be cloning. The copy of you would be dead in either case.

Hmm, have you guys watched The Prestige?

Neither have I, it appears. :(

Anyway, looks fake. Easily done with camera tricks. We'll see though.

I heard a few months ago that they were able to teleport a few photons of information, whatever that means.

EDIT: Also, if the radio antennae is the point of "teleportation", then the egg should've broken. And assorted other things when an object tries to occupy what something else is occupying (which is the base of the glass).

The video is just a demonstration of how the effect might work, as the movie maker states on the Coast To Coast AM website (the second link in the OP).
