We're programmed to be selfish as to survive.

Source?

I'm not a communist or a communist sympathiser, but I do think there is a growing amount of evidence that actually co-operative humans are more likely to survive than non- co-operative humans.  I think the work of people like Marc Hauser and Steven Pinker really push this idea forward.

Hamilton's Rule and Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma prove you wrong.

Say whatever you want about the religious. They love, indeed seek out, suffering and oppression. They thrive on it.

Proof?

Hahahahaha!

RYFB. The New Testament.

Missionary work.

Their constant claims of persecution.

They revel in suffering. They suffer in this world so they can enjoy the next. That's the party line.

No one is going to mourn his passing. He was a depraved lunatic, and his death is a relief for any sane individual.

Aren't you attacking someone's individual value on belief in something?

Insofar as the great majority of believers were indoctrinated in childhood, have not been presented with alternatives, and know no other way of life, then the answer must be no. It is not the value we are attacking, but the system of thought and the social institutions which support said system.

If someone decides to be a Christian, of his own free will, after carefully considering all the options and arguments, then he has chosen moral depravity: and such people should be allowed to live with each other, wallowing in their moral depravity, as long as they hurt no one else.

I don't respect any religion that is founded on attacking people's individual values, on taking things on faith, and on mental and physical coercion.

NO ONE should respect any such religion, JUST AS no one actually respects any other ideology that is founded on attacking people's individual values, on taking things on faith, and on mental and physical coercion (except those they have been brainwashed in believing in their childhood, to which evils they will always be blind).

Just because one calls it "religion," an ill-defined term if there is one, does not make it substantially different from any such ideology.

Anyone who promotes attacking people's individual values, taking things on faith, and mental and physical coercion, is an enemy of society, is a traitor to his fellows, and should be considered as such.

Iron does float! As long as it's shaped correctly, most things do float :)

Fine, fine, yes, an iron boat can float. Thank you Mr. Commie for bringing up a detail that adds nothing to the conversation.

On paper it's a good idealology as well

Wow. Not only are you religious, but you also consider a total takeover of society by the ruling class, and the melding of business and politics, to be a "good idealology." (sic)

Why aren't you living in a commune already?

We were talking about imperialism. The American Empire is pretty pitiful; compared to the British Empire, it doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Sure, your rulers got a lot of puppet dictators in place, but they basically fuck up everything they do. Versailles Treaty: do I even need to explain? Vietnam War: major fuck up. Iraq: major fuck up coming from financing the Taliban in the first place. 9/11: major fuck up, total mishandling of the terrorist threat. Somalia: major fuck up, instead of supporting the already-existing tribes they have created a new Islamic fundamentalist country. Need I go on?

There is basically nothing the imperialists have done that has been successful, except getting the nukes first and making Japan cry uncle (ironically, more of a scientific achievement than a military one). Of course, they also try to justify their little nuke genocide morally, which is pretty damn laughable. The day duhmerican imperialists start being moral people is the day I become a commie (which, unless you're going to kidnap and lobotomize me, is not gonna happen).

Because I think money changers who transact for taxation purposes are not criminals, now I believe in taxation? Dazzling display of logic. Should I also believe that anyone who believes in taxation should be trashed?

Yes, taxation is evil (and incidentally Jesus supported taxation, which makes him complicit), but the stated reason by our Christian friend was "greed." He believes that greed is enough of a reason to commit assault.

Let me tell you something right now, if you believe this, get ready to go to jail often, because there's a lot of greedy people for you to assault out there.

72
The bible is not meant to be taken literally, at least that's what I believe.

What anyone believes generally has very little to do with reality.

Indeed! This is why you will never have any say over anything in the world.

Unlike you, I make no claims to "have a say over anything." I'm not an imperialist, nor do I believe in forcing others to obey a non-existing "country."

That's why people like you will never win over people like me. Violent people can steal and kill, but they can't win over the truth, because the truth does not depend on specific people in order to prevail.

"Our country rules the world."

So did the British a century ago. And before them, the French. The Romans, the Greeks, everyone had their turn. As far as Empires go, yours is the most ineffectual in history, governed by the stupidest tyrants. Nixon, Reagan and Dubya? You gotta be kidding me.

BTW, I updated my last post so that what I said would be clearer.

So why are people trying to associate FE with religion? It is true that the Bible says the Earth is flat, but it also says that rabbits chew their cud, that pi=3, and that iron floats. You can pin any bullshit on the Bible, because not one part of it is true.

Who the fuck did the money-changer hurt? And how did he deserve for his belongings to get trashed by this madman? Do you think current agents of change should be trashed as well? Why or why not?

Are you always this careless, or do you sometimes let other people think for you?

Christianity is a strong religion that holds our country of weak people together.

All the more reason to destroy Christianity. But I doubt it props up your bullshit "country" all that much. The connection between religion and society has become far too subtle to warrant that sort of statement.

What mainly holds your bullshit "country" together is the shared delusion that the Constitution is a valid document of law and the delusion that "United States" courts are legitimate courts of law. A hundred years ago, Lysander Spooner destroyed both premises eloquently in his essays "No Treason" and "Trial by Jury."

Once again, educate yourself on the subjects, don't just repeat useless garbage that you have seen others repeat and use for your own purpose.

Excuse me, sir? I read the Bible, you obviously haven't.

If you realized why he did these things, you'd see he had a very good reason to fly off the handle; like at the money counters. (greed)

So other people's greed, which hurt no one, justifies a so-called holy man flying into a blind rage?

The Catholic Church in Poland was instrumental in bringing about the revolutions of 1989, hardly keeping the oppressed content to their fate...

The Catholic Church is against Communism, because it is a competing religion. Don't pretend to tell us that switching one religion to another is freedom. As I said before, it's not.

I, for one, am more of an agnostic, but that in no way means I can't respect Jesus and want to be a strong of a person as he was.

Yes, Jesus was quite an admirable character. I guess a few magic tricks excuse his little, um, foibles, such as flying into blind rages, cursing his mother, preaching hellfire and withdrawing information so that people may go there, being basically a street bum and living off widows, encouraging people to leave their loved ones to serve him, promoting stealing, encouraging submission to the State, and so on and so forth...

Excuse me, but even Sai Baba is more credible than this cheap bullshitter you respect so much... at least he gives people better miracles and doesn't fly into rages.

NO. stop right there I will not be accused of supporting child abusers! I support the free choice to follow and worship whatever god/goddess you feel and the personal search for a higher power.

I don't care what you pledge to support. Practically, you support RELIGION. And religion is the foremost tool and motivation for child abuse. Period!

I do not/have not and will not stand by those who abuse religion to excuse abusing children, making war etc.

And yet you don't care enough to do anything about it.

and no, for your information, the slave classes don't always sit up snug with their religion and let everyone walk over them. In China I believe (or russia, one of the two)there is a system to try and remove christianity and there is a massive underground motion to oppose this system and declare their right to religion

Do you realize how stupid that last paragraph was?

You say the slave classes don't always approve of religion, and then you give me an example of a slave class ACTIVELY promoting some religions against others!

As if choosing one master over another is a form of freedom!

God is selfish.  He wants everyone to believe in Him even though there's no rational reason to do so.  Therefore, if you accept the basic tenets of Christianity (which inevitably lead to this conclusion) you also have to accept that He is not perfect, by His own definition.  Therefore, His very nature as described in the Bible is contradicted by the reality you accept as a Christian.  That one contradiction is enough reason to question everything in the Bible.

Actually, God is jealous, not selfish.
He states in both Exodus and Deuteronomy (10 Commandments) that he is jealous, and we should not bow down to images or idols (respectively) and/or Gods. But, if we look at God as jealous... who can he be jealous of? I believe, this, in itself, is proof of God's fallibility and his lack of absolute sole power. But, this in no way makes me question everything in the Bible.

Frosty the Snowman is happy, not compassionate.
It is stated in the song of our ancestors, Frosty the Snowman:

Verily, Frosty the Snowman
Was a joyous, nay, happy soul.
With yonder corncob pipe and button nose
And two eyes, of coal manufacture.

It is very clear here, that Frosty the Snowman has a "happy soul." Experts still disagree on what "button nose" means (viz., if it is a real button, or simply describes the shape of his nose). Also, evil secularists argue that eyes made of coal could not actually see. But we believe that coal simply means that his eyes were very dark, and did not have whites. They were manufactured by our Creator to look like coals. That's all.

No, it is not a tool for the oppressed. It is a tool that keeps the oppressed content of their fate, instead of rebelling against their masters. This is a universal fact- kings and presidents, slavers, scammers all use religion to exploit others, and religion is always enthusiastically upheld by the slave classes.

If a grandma uses religion to make herself feel better before she dies, then good for her. But I'd rather sacrifice her happiness to save millions of destitute people, than the reverse.

Give man back his angst, so he may be free.

And if you do not want to brainwash children, then why do you support an order of things which does? Any support for religion is a support for child abuse. There's no way around it! YOU YOURSELF may not practice child abuse, but you give aid and comfort to those who do.

If I were you, I'd rather lose my superficial comfort in the name of what is right, which is the only real comfort anyone has. But then again, I don't know how honest you are.

We're not the ones imposing faith on innocent children. You are.

All we want is for people to be free, as individuals, to come to their own will.

And this is what your belief system and all other belief systems fight against tooth and nail, because THEY CANNOT SURVIVE IF MEN ARE FREE. People who are free and happy have no need for religion, State, or nationalism. Only people who are oppressed flock to these beliefs as a substitute for freedom.

It's as simple as that.

Whether God exists or not is irrelevant in this context, if it carries people through the evils of life, gives them a confidence to face death, and an inner strength, how is this a bad thing?

I'm sure many serial killers thought the same thing about their murders.

How can murder be a bad thing, if it gives some people inner strength and a confidence to face death?

No, as usual for a theist you did not read my post very well.

I was asking the opener of this thread as regards to: if evolution is true, then what is the point of believing in god?

Cuz according to the bible he did a lot more than just create us. That's just one chapter.

Please, do instruct us on what else this sky-fairy did.
