Suggestions & Concerns / Anyone know of a good "library" module for Joomla?
« on: December 27, 2012, 05:58:38 AM »
I'm expanding the Flat Earth Library on the main website and it's getting a bit cluttered.  Is there a good document-organizing module for Joomla?  Or something outside of Joomla is fine too.  I just want a way of keeping a large-ish catalog of documents organized.  The docs will be a mix of mostly PDFs with a handful of JPGs mixed in as well.  Any suggestions?

Announcements / Major new addition to the Flat Earth Library!

I just added about 300 pages of documents to the Library.  It's from Lady Blount's book "Flat or Spherical".  Like many of the Flat Earth books from that era, it's a collection of smaller works.  I've broken it into pieces as logically as possible.  There are 19 'chapters' so far and I'll be adding more materials over the Christmas holiday.  For now, though, here it is:

I'm going to buck the trend and suggest that you get a worse browser.

Just a heads-up for everyone: Episode 4 is now online.  Lord Wilmore interviews Professor Darryl Jones about Hollow Earth theory in literature.  Very interesting stuff!

Ok, tried something slightly different.  Can you try posting again?

And does it make any difference that I'm using Chrome in OSX vs. whatever browser(s) you guys are having issues with?

Thanks Steve. Hopefully John will pop by soonish.

I think I might have fixed it.  Maybe.

I leave the country for a week and we get huge exposure.  The same thing happened that time we were featured on the BBC a few years back.  Nicely done, Wilmore!  I should go on vacation more often for the good of the Society.

I haven't been swamped with emails about the article but I have had a few.  And much more activity on Twitter as well.  Some of that is "lol ur stupid" comments but most is positive.

I'm looking into alternate hosting services now.

In the mean time, you can still discuss Go Fish.

Also, is there any truly compelling reason to use VPS instead of just moving to a different regular hosting plan?  I know FES gets a fair amount of traffic.. but it's not like there aren't a million forums out there larger than us who successfully use non-VPS hosts.  Considering I don't really want to get involved in the 'server' aspect of things, is a VPS actually that much better than just getting a more robust hosting plan at a different company?

This seems a bit more straightforward, although the reviews are pretty lackluster:

Is there a similar company with a better reputation?  Preferably US-based, although UK would be ok.

Hmm, I don't like the sound of "requires some work to setup for web hosting."  One of the things I like about my current setup is that if something goes wrong, I can just create a support ticket and it gets dealt with (word censoring being the exception).  They're responsible for dealing with the server stuff.  I just have to deal with cPanel/WHM to admin the sites, which is pretty painless.  I don't want to be in a situation where something goes wrong and the Linode support says, "you messed up some settings on the server so you need to fix it."

LordDave: I'm considering the move now.  Is using Linode fairly straightforward to set up and use?  I like the idea of a VPS but I don't have any interest in messing around with the technical guts of it.  I just want a reliable service where I can host a few domains and control everything through WHM/cPanel.

There's a follow-up episode coming out in a few days.  Wilmore did a great interview with an expert in Hollow Earth literature.  Really fascinating stuff!

I heard the first 20 mins. I never warmed to Duncan. Rodney though. Rodney is awesome. In fact I'm starting to think I'm part of the wrong society.

Yeah, he's a really nice guy.  Very friendly and open.  I wouldn't mind having him on again sometime, but more as a guest and less as an interview subject.  I'm curious to find out about his views on topics other than hollow Earth theory..

Episode 3 is up!  Sorry about the delay between episodes 2 and 3.  Our guest this time is hollow Earth theorist Rodney Cluff from

It's available on iTunes and on our podcast page.

Episode 4 will be up very soon.  And now that I'm back in the UK, hopefully episodes will be available on a much more regular basis.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Friend of Mine Can't Register

I checked through the error logs and it seems to have been a problem with a bot-prevention mod.  It had a limit of 20 queries per day and stops working after that.  Unfortunately, it doesn't bother to actually say that when it errors out, so nobody knows what's going on.

It's resolved now, though.  I just did a test registration and it worked fine.

Hmm.  I just tried it and got the same thing.  I'm looking into it..

I'm aware that the server errors and the keyword censoring issues are still going on.  I'm trying to get the hosting service to sort that out now/still.

You should talk about FET.  Just saying.

Good idea.  I don't know why no one else has suggested this.

Are people still having issues with this?  The hosting company said it was a memory issue that had been dealt with.  I haven't had the error today but I've only been on briefly.  If it continues to pop up, I'll raise the ticket again..

I don't know if you'll enjoy Rodney Cluff more or less than Duncan, but the two are certainly very, very different characters.  I'm in the process of editing the Cluff episode now and that should hopefully be up in the next week or so.  It'll be shorter than Duncan's episode(s) -- a single episode clocking in at around 1h15m when it's all edited, I think.

Same here.

Is anyone messing with the php files?

I don't think it's forums issue.  I was getting the same error accessing the front page as well.

I use a decent browser and I'm getting that error from time to time as well.  I've contacted the hosting service and hopefully it'll be resolved very soon.

Episode 2 should be up very soon.  It's available on the website ( but hasn't come up in iTunes yet.  This is the second bit of the interview with Duncan Lunan.

Also, keep an eye out for episode 3 in the very near future.  Wilmore and I interviewed Rodney Cluff, famed Hollow Earth believer, last week.  I'm in the process of editing it now.  Should be up in the next week or so!

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Never Received Membership Materials
« on: July 28, 2012, 11:38:10 AM »
All of the membership packs (up until about 6 days ago) and all of the t-shirts/hoodies (including yours, Gayer -- we found a brown hoodie!) are en route.  As Benjamin Franklin said, I'm notoriously slow but I've never knowingly deprived anyone of a membership pack or t-shirt.  So if you've ordered anything recently-ish, it's on the way.

Posted it on the Facebook page, not sure whose mistake it was neglecting to mention it there.  :)

Also, a non-iTunes source would be convenient.

Weird, I posted it on there yesterday.  On one of the FES Facebook things, anyway.  Oh well.  Thanks for posting it wherever it was that I didn't.

Also, for non-iTunes people, the podcast is available here:

It can be downloaded, subscribed to or listened to via web browser from that page.

Respectfully submit that the sodomic disease originally known as the gay plague should revert to its original official name Gay Related Immune Deficiency (GRID)

Well, I'm certainly glad you respectfully submitted that idea.  If not for that, I might have thought your post was hateful and incredibly homophobic.

This has been a bit of a top secret project with Lord Wilmore and me, but it's finally time to make it public:

The first episode of the Flat Earth Society Podcast is available for download!  If you use iTunes, you can either search for "Flat Earth Society Podcast" in the iTunes store or click here:

If you're not an iTunes person, the podcast can also be found here:

The podcast format will focus mostly on interviews with other outside-the-box thinkers.  We'll discuss their ideas, their background and the unique ways in which they view the world.  The guest on our first episode is Duncan Lunan, an astronomer, science writer and science fiction author.

Have a listen and let us know what you think.  If you enjoy it, please give us a positive review on iTunes.  If you hate it, please give us a positive review on iTunes anyway!

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Flat Earth Merchandise

There recently was Saddam. I don't think Daniel has sent them out yet though, probably hasn't received them from the shirt/hoody making people yet.

Yes, that.  I should be getting them very soon, though.  And the packaging is all sorted out already, so it's just a matter of dropping the shirts into the shipping bags and sending them.  I'll tweet/post/email people as soon as the stuff is on its way.
