Technology, Science & Alt Science / relativity and black holes
« on: November 21, 2011, 02:37:40 PM »
So the other day I had a random thought that I think is has not been asked on this forum before.
so the faster you go the denser you get according to relativity.( you gain mass but your length shrinks) so if you are going fast enough shouldn't you collapse into a black hole? and since it is all relative isn't there a reference frame where we all collapse into a black hole? does anyone know how relativity deals with this? I am probably missing something obvious...

I was talking with my Boss on what is considered Plagiarism and apparently turning in the same paper to multiple classes is considered Plagiarism and my college. I was wondering what other peoples thoughts were.

Technology, Science & Alt Science / Rope jumping
« on: November 02, 2010, 10:24:31 AM »
So my friend is a rock climber and is thinking of going rope jumping. this involves tying a rope to to one side of a bridge, having it hang under the bridge and jumping off the other side. he asked me to come up with an equation that describes the max force experienced by the climber. the rope has a linear stretch force. so it has a nice K value. it has a max stretch of 30%. I was wondering what equations you guys could come up with? I came up with two but I made a lot of assumptions to make a nice solvable system.

I was just wondering peoples opinions on this, what do you think it means for the U.S. I don't think it will do anything major but I am hoping it shows that the country is moving away from the extremes of politics it is at now.

Technology, Science & Alt Science / black body
« on: March 04, 2010, 09:11:44 PM »
in modern physics the teacher mentioned that gasses emit certain wavelengths of light when they are heated depending on the gas. my question is why doesn't it just emit black body radiation.

anyone else play it yet? I thought it was a lot of fun with a great story for a video game.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / main problem.
« on: January 29, 2010, 11:30:20 AM »
What does everyone think the main problem with human nature is. there is obviously a couple problems for there to be genocides going on. my belief is everyone cares to much about image. in most of the truly horrible events most people in the area didn't participate but they also didn't try to stop it. they didn't want to stand out. I think on the whole people are good but they let image get in the way of doing the right thing. if I leave my car unlocked with the keys inside it in a open area most people won't steal it. it is the few bad ones that make certain areas "bad".

The Lounge / research project.

I need to do a research project for a club I am in. I am a math/physics major. any ideas. I am half way through my sophomore year so I wasn't really getting ready for one yet and halve no idea what to do.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Gods
« on: December 21, 2009, 10:38:28 AM »
I have read the bible cover to cover. Is there anything in it that actually says there is only one god? The commandment says you can't worship any other gods but I didn't see anything that about believing in them. in short can you be a Christin and believe in other gods as long as you don't pray to them?

Technology, Science & Alt Science / Entropy?
« on: October 07, 2009, 07:20:57 AM »
Do you think that we will ever be able to decrease the total entropy in the universe? if so How? My bet is quantum generators that use Brownian motion. At least I have not read anything that says it could not work. I also would like to here if anyone knows how energy from virtual particles affects the total entropy in the universe.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / murder
« on: September 16, 2009, 07:43:12 AM »
would it be worse to kill someone or go back in time and make it so they never existed. at least if you kill someone they had a chance to live. then if you believe in the soul, the thing that goes on after you die you stopped it from being created. That would be the closest to destroying someones sou as you could come. so which is worse?

Technology, Science & Alt Science / breaking the law

Do you think that we will ever be able to go between solar systems faster then the speed of light?
If so what way do you think we will accomplish this. i.e. wormholes, warp drive ect..

Technology, Science & Alt Science / relativity.
« on: July 22, 2009, 03:14:47 PM »
OK I just had a random though about getting around one part of relativity wondering what other people thought about it.
Okay simplified version lets assume the universe is a hypersphere. (simplest form I could come up with) now if you have two machines that are traveling at .5c relative to each other.  both have an atomic clock on board. now as they go past each other they tell each other there time. now they both keep going until they meet each other on the other side of the universe. now if they then tell each other what time they have when they meet again. by doing this they could find out which one was going faster relative to the universe by which one was going faster relative to the universe. by doing a few of the test you could find out what rest to the rest of the universe is.
I am not an expert on relativity so I just was wondering if A. my understanding was correct and B. if it would work.

Technology, Science & Alt Science / singularity
« on: April 28, 2009, 11:29:18 AM »
the idea of a singularity is something that is infinitely small, However when dealing with Plancks, stuff can only get to a certain size so does that mean that a singularity isn't actually infinity small, it is just one plank length wide?

The Lounge / games and vista.
« on: April 12, 2009, 08:43:49 AM »
Okay I have a new lab top that runs vista. Any time I play a fps sometime while I am playing it it opens up what I believe is a translator. a little box in the upper left starts having Japanese or Chines character being typed. So instead of moving my character I am typing in Chinese. Any Ideas what is causing this. Microsoft says it must be my keyboard.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / religeon good or bad

has religion been a positive or a negative influence in the world as a whole? Has it saved more lives then it has killed? all religions not just one in particular.

Technology, Science & Alt Science / Event horizen
« on: March 12, 2009, 07:09:42 PM »
Nothing can get out of the event horizon of a black hole. But what if you have two super massive black holes orbiting each other. If they are big enough you will not be spaghettified (stretched) . Now lets say they are in an elliptical orbit. could there event horizons overlap at one point and then separate without them becoming a super black hole. If they could, could you go to the balance point were their gravity on you would be equal and opposite. if you go there before they come together if you stay at that balance point when the event horizons over lap and then just stay at that point as they separate again. Another question is whether other gravity wells change the shape of the event horizon. if the event horizon can move could that be a way of getting out of a black hole. you don't pass the event horizon the event horizon passes you. if you go into a spherical black hole then have a big mass move next to it. If you do this quickly enough before you have a time to fall all the way in would the gravity "cancel out"(yes I know that is inaccuracy terms but I could not come up with a better term) making the event horizon on that side of the black hole move in. If you are close enough to it when this happens could the event horizon move in leaving you outside it.

Flat Earth Debate / Asteroids
« on: March 02, 2009, 05:38:30 PM »
Okay if Gravity is caused by the universe accelerating at 9.8 ft per a second then why do asteroids that hit the planet have gravity affect them. since they were accelerating at 9.8ft per second why do they stop accelerating when they hit the planet. Shouldn't they not appear to be affected by gravity and float?

Technology, Science & Alt Science / tachyons
« on: February 25, 2009, 05:32:51 PM »
tachyons are particles that travel faster then the speed of light and can never go slower then the speed of light and travel back in time. they also have negative energy. Do they break any laws of physics and what would they mean for the universe.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Probability

Question Most people are whatever religeon they start out as. Very Few swich to Another religion. Since other religous people from other religions believe they are right then obviously being born into somthing can make you positive it is correct. The question is what was the chance you were born into the correct religeon. Otherwise your assming at least 4/5 te world is wrong and you happen to be born into the correct one.
