Recently, I've seen a lot of anger directed towards people who express dislike of the English flag, and other paraphernalia.  People have said things along the lines of 'If you don't like the English flag, I'll be happy to help you pack your bags'.

I think this is ridiculous. England is merely a bit of soil. Are these people obsessed with soil?

To quote David Mitchell :

'If you burn a flag, it's a flag you've bought. "I've burn your flag!" No, you've burn your own flag.'

Discuss, because I'm too tired.

Shameless spam, soz and everything, but it's something my cousin (in law? ???) is doing, and it seems pretty much like a good idea.

Giving money to charity, without spamming people for money. Good idea, I reckon.

...and some of the stuff he claims he'll be doing is very interesting.

I just bought two CDs today. Playing them through my hifi, they sound absolutely fine, but if I play them through my laptop, or import them, it sounds like static-y noise. All other songs play fine through my laptop, and I can import all other CDs absolutely fine through it. The CDs also play fine on at least one other laptop. What the fuck is going on?

I'm not sure what forum to put this in, so feel free to move it. I'm agnostic, and my main reason to consider belief in a higher power is music. Minor chords are sad, and major chords are happy, and so on. We can create particular moods with sounds. The one that particularly intrigues me is the so-called 'Devil's interval': that is, and augmented fourth. In times gone by, it was believed that this interval was 'evil', and you can see why.
Metal music, music that often focuses on evil, uses this interval frequently, although whether it's anything to do with this decision, or just because it sounds 'evil', I don't know. What are your opinions on moods and feelings inside notes, chords and intervals?

Now, to find something worth writing.

I'm taking German, Maths and Music at A2 Level (The year before uni) and I have no idea what to do. I'm aiming for AAB grades at the end, if all goes well.
I've looked at taking each subject on its own at University, but I'm not convinced about doing any of them on their own. I've looked at German/Maths, and Maths on the Erasmus Scheme (Maths, with a year in Germany), and these are possibilities. I might take a gap year to get guitar and piano up to grade 8 and do as much as I can musically.
I was given a book from school that I hoped would tell me what other subjects I could take with my A levels that weren't specifically the subjects themselves, but it didn't in any meaningful way.

Does anybody have any meaningful suggestions about alternative degrees I could go for with those A level subjects?

Or tell me 'What I'd do is.....' if you can tell me why.

The Lounge / I need some computer help...
« on: August 07, 2009, 11:54:50 AM »
I'm soon to be getting a new computer (hopefully), and I have a copy of Cubase on this computer. This computer is too slow to play MIDI at the right speed, so I'm really looking forward to using it on the new computer. However, I don't exactly own Cubase (a friend gave me a disc with it on, and some software to convince it I had the dongle you need to run it), so I was wondering how I go about putting it on a new computer.

Thankyou plz

I'm not sure if there's been anything like this before, but here goes.

Post the name of a band that you love that people are unlikely to have heard of/ likely to have pigeon-holed and not tried. Post what they do/did, and why you like them.

The Lounge / Slogan Needed!
« on: June 25, 2009, 10:35:04 AM »
There's going to be a small festival in my town this weekend, and I'm making a banner for the area where me and my friends will camp. Normally at festivals, we have one saying 'The People's Republic of Belper', but as it's Belper Festival, this will probably not have much impact. Any interesting slogans for a group of students?
