If the earth were flat, it would be easy to make a map on a flat sheet of paper with correct distances between cities and continents, and with a constant scale for the whole map. Easy. We would have had such maps for decades if the earth is flat. But no such map exists.
The reason just might be because it is impossible to accurately represent a curved surface on a flat piece of paper.
