Flat Earth General / Re: List Of Things That Don't Exist To Round Earthers
« on: November 21, 2017, 04:18:45 AM »
I recently went on vacation to the beach. The ships disappeared as they faded into the distance. However, we have several working theories on why ships disappear mast first. There is the non-euclidean theory. There is the fact that nearby waves appear larger than the distant in actuality larger ship. There is perspective as described by Rowbotham. There is what some opponents have called 'bendy light' or the electromagnetic accelerator. There is simple refraction. The list goes on.

To me, it sounds like you are ignorant to our beliefs and have come here to stomp about, call us foolish and unemployed. In reality, I do work in a field of work in the real (flat) world. I am a software engineer. I was trained in Mathematics and Computer Science.
RE-tards have zero explanation as to why I can stand on a shore at the south tip of Lake Michigan, looking north at a ship sailing away directly to north, disappears from my sight.

They all chime in..."It is disappearing from sight because it is going under the horizon..."

When confronted with the fact that same ship traveling to the east or west of my position along the shoreline of Lake Michigan will remain well in my view for many miles longer than it did when traveling to the north, there is the sound of fucking RE-tard crickets...

And you can't see how this shows you stand on a very very large (with respect to you) sphere?

For those interested Project Loon from google is supplying thousands of balloons to fly over earth.

That'sa great project that will make a great impact when fully operational.

Also nice to know that before 2013 when project loon was begun, the world had no satellite communication. Right?

So being quite bored, I decided to go through this thread again and saw something
that just blew my brains out of my ears.

Quote
5: if the Earth is flat, then Antarctica would surround the circle, correct?  Then how does, for at the most, 8 months at a time, Antarctica have the sun shining constantly, but when you move North (or inward, towards the center), the sun starts to rise and set normally?
Not necessarily. Michael Wilmore put forth a model that didn't match the UN logo. Others have as well. But historically, yes. I personally went to the antarctic. I noticed a difference between the 'farmers almanac' version of events you talk of, and the reality.

Did you see that? John Davis has been to Antarctica! And he could bring back poctures of the ice wall. Neither was he abducted by the NASA trained armed penguin guards that patrol the wall.

Oh wait. Antarctic. Just 60 south. Just anywhere in the immediate vicinity of the continent of Antarctica.

Still mind blown here though

Zetetic proof

Whenever you see someone use the word "zetetic" to describe a proof of something, every red known to man should go up to warn you that you are dealing with someone who has never been to college and they are merely regurgitating a word that sounds like reflects some level of informed intelligence.

"Zetetic Proof"... Hahahahahahahahaha

"Zetetic" implies learning from personal observation, dismissing knowledge from outside sources. (at least that is my take, based on the use of the word around here).

This leads me to...

I wonder if they would use a "zetetic" neurosurgeon?

"I am Dr Ramsbottom. Dr of Zetetic Neurosurgery. I will be performing your brain surgery today"

........aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhh

"Does that hurt? Or have you been brainwashed into thinking it hurts by the government who by the way have been lying to you?"

if you want to prove the shape of earth, you do not have to take an expensive trip to the south pole.
instead, buy a reliable sextant and measure the angle of Polaris (location A). (you know Polaris doesn't move across the sky)
travel 1000km south (location B) and measure the angle again.
now you have enough information to calculate the height of polaris assuming you are on a flat Earth.
you can now easily calulate the angle of polaris if you would travel another 1000km south (location C)
go to location C, measure again and the results should match your calculations.

If not, you are not living on a flat planet.

a sextant and travelling 2000km are much cheaper and easier than to organize a whole trip to the south pole with crew and equipment etc.
That is perfect.  It will provide a definitive answer and is pretty inexpensive.  Your method is preferred to test repeatability.  However, if you take one measurement you should already be able to calculate the angle for the second.  Check it against the actual second measurement and Bob's your Uncle.  Okay, I really don't know what the Bob phrase actually means but it seems to be how other people have used it.   ;D

You don't even have to travel.  I live at 41 30 32.5 N (according to several online address to lat/long sites).  While I dont have a sextant, I do have a decent telescope that will give me the elevation and azimuth of whatever Im looking at so I can do that measurement.  I call my brother in Tampa (27 57 2.1 N) and have him do the same thing.  Of course I'll have to compensate for altitude.  Just to be accurate.

This is a great experiment.  I would like to suggest several FEers do this though because if I post my results Ill just get accused of lying...again.  It would be the easiest way to get an answer and it really doesn't require traveling.  I'm kinda surprised FEers aren't constantly taking data points like this.  This argument could be over one way or the other in a matter of months if not weeks if FEers would take these kinds of physical measurements.

Mike

Physical measurements? Not taken from a youtube video or internet meme? Or a book written in the 1800s? Physical experiments that will not produce blurry home videos? That cannot produce positively verifyable inconclusive results that can be argued 9 ways from sunday? I'm quite sure they'll pass.

I am now interested to see if Papa Legba has more to say about the situation and what reactions by REers are made in response.
So you just want someone, who just slings insults, to come in and make a fool of himself.  Yeah, that's an adequate response to questions.  Really proving that FEers know how properly defend a position in a debate.

PROTIP:  When you resort to insults to cover the fact you have no answer, you lose the argument.  When you require someone else do the insulting for you, you not only lose the argument, you show just how much courage and conviction you actually hold in your own viewpoints.

FE is victorious in this debate.  Proven by many who responded to the claims of the victors.

Typical flat earth reasoning. We win because we can ignore you more. Na na na na na na can't hear you I won na na na na.

If your really believe in a flat earth, then you truly are a dumbass.

If you don't, you're a much better troll than Jroa

370
Let us please remember that the timeline of FE is much longer than that of RET.  This makes terminology to include everyone interested in RE be properly referred to as round Earth "believers".

Would RE believers even dare propose this causeway anomaly as a purported problem (understood by others and explained by FEers) to Jesus of Nazareth, Christopher Columbus, or Albert Einstein?

Case closed.

You keep thinking you are makig sense. And yes, if you asked any of thise people you listed up there, they'll agrre with me. All of them would have told you the earth was round and be amazed at the stupidity of you thinking it was flat.

371
When I first started looking into flat earth claims, I came across a video by some guy talking about souther hemisphere flights. So fella opens a flight booking site and searches for flights from Sydney to Santiago. A list of flights pop up and at the top of the list are some direct flights. Fella goes "here we see some direct flights from Sydney to Santiago. I don't believe these flights exist. I think they are just there to throw us off bla bla bla" or some such. Can you just imagine? Didn't try to see if the flight exists or not. Didn't try to make a booking himself. Worse, a few posts in the comments section were from people who said they had taken those flights themselves and the fella just goes "LIAR. SHILL. AGENT OF THE OPPRESSOR" . That is the flat earth movement for you. As long as a fact does not rhyme with their "beliefs" and it is a belief, it must be a lie. It must be denied. And those that espose those facts are evil. Go through the post on memes on this forum and see what flat earthers really think of those who do not go along with their nonsense.

All in a bid to dodge the question. Typical flattard trolls

After a while here, you'll find that the flat earthers will never respond in any sensible manner to legitimate scientific questions posted by roundies.  And if they do, 50% of them will refer you back to a scientifically bankrupt snake-oil salesman by the name of Samuel Birley Rowbotham also known as "Parallax".  It's actually quite funny (sad?) that the so-called "evidence" for a flat earth is 150 years out of date, and that the flat earthers can't produce a single shred of evidence supporting their cause that's less than a century old.  And modern science be damned LOL.

You know, I finally went through the FAQs and flat earth wiki and was I embarrassed for the FES. It was full of 1800s experiments that were shown to be inconclusive in the 1800s and what passed for modern experiments and proofs consisted basicallt of some fellow saying "I have conducted such and such experiments and shown it to mean the earth is flat". No details, nothing. And they'll run out of their holes with statements like "the flat earth has been scientifically proven" and "the round earth has been scientifically shown to be false". Do these guys even understand what it means to experimentally show, prove and disprove a thing?

Flat Earth General / Re: Mandela Effect and Flat Earth
« on: October 27, 2017, 05:35:07 AM »

You might have a trace of credibility if there was a flat earth model that "worked", but the simple fact of the matter is that there is none!

No flat earth model explains:
  • measured distances all over the earth,
  • sunrises, sunsets, moonrises and moonsets,
  • the observed elevation and direction of the sun and moon through the day and night,
  • solar and lunar eclipses,
  • gravitation - almost all flat-earthers deny its existence.
  • etc, etc.
As a result almost every flat earther seems to have a different idea on so many pieces of "flat earth theory".
Some think the sun is exactly 5000 km high, some think the sun is "just above the clouds" and at least one thinks it is 15 km high and
there is at least one who claims that ths sun is :P in a mountain at the North Pole :P - I kid you not..

Then no-one can agree on a map of this flat earth.
If the earth is flat, then a flat map of the flat earth would be simply a scaled diagram of that flat earth.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
So the whole problem is that flat earthers come up with so many different maps, such as these: The following are maps that various Flat Earth Society members believe to be the true flat earth "continental layout":
This?

FE Ice Wall Map
Generally redarded as the "Accepted" map.
    Or maybe this?

FE Bipolar Map
(0, 0) centred AEP
    Or maybe this?

1893 map by Orlando Ferguson.
Credit: Don Homuth

Or maybe this for the Northern Hemisphere?

Map Northern Hemiplane, DET
and this for the Southern Hemisphere?

Map Southern Hemiplane
    Or maybe this?

Sandokhan "True" Flat Earth Map
All of these maps are proposed by various quite active flat earthers.

But none of these maps fit with the real world.

The reason that there are so many proposed flat earth models is simply that an accurate flat earth model is quite impossible.

Dude, you didn't get his point. There can be no flat earth model until we all close our eyes tight and believe real hard in a flat earth. Then the new earth will come. And old things will pass away. Then flat earth models will begin to work.

HA!!

Is that the best you can come up with?  I know you just about fell out of your chair running the numbers ;)  THIS CANNOT BE DENIED.
Of course it can be denied!

You managed, either accidently or on purpose, ended up with an expression for sun height that is completely independent of the latitude.

Look!
Sun's height = (equator to pole dist) x (1 - Lat/90)/(2 x (1 - Lat/90))
or Sun's height = (equator to pole dist)/2
Of course the answer is going to always end up as 5000 km.

And you have never shown anything is wrong with my original methods, so try again!

The following table gives the data for distance of each location from Vaupes and the elevations of the sun at solar noon on 20/Mar/2016.
All sun elevations were obtained from Sun Earth Tools as close as possible to the local midday on the last equinox. The time was UTC 20/Mar/2016 16:48.

These locations and the directions to the sun on a flat earth are shown in the left hand  diagram below:
Once we have the angles from two sites the height of the sun can be calculated from: h = d/(cot(A1) + cot(A2)).

Sun Height on Flat Earth along 70W Long

Sun Height on Globe Earth along 70W Long

Using this method to find the height of the sun on the Flat earth gives measurements from 3609 km (for Kimmirut and Vaupes) to 6256 km (for Chupa District to Vaupes) depending on the spacing of the measurement sites.

In other words, claiming that the Flat Earth sun is at about 5,000 km altitude has no foundation whatever.

It is very telling when we note that when we plot these angles on a spherical earth the directions to the sun are all parallel.
Explain that!

Now, if instead of using these measurements to determine the Flat Earth sun height, we use them as Eratosthenes did, assuming a distant sun and use this data to calculate the circumference of the earth.

The circumference can be calculated from (distance from Vaupes) * 360/(angle difference of sun from Vaupes)

This time, we get far better consistency.
The estimated figures for the circumference of the earth range from 39,465 km to 40,334 km.
Certainly these figures would indicate that the earth is a globe with a distant sun.

And don't bring up the 89.06 again, that was used correctly in the calculations.

Rab, can you use his excell sheet to calculate observations based on your figures for the above?

Or do you mean his equations simply remove latitude from calculations. If it does, kindly show where that happens.

I meant a flat Earth would have to be a disc.
Going a few more steps from there shows it can't be flat.

Yeah, I know it can't be flat, but you're missing the point of the thread, which is to show that the flattists accept the shape of their earth model to be circular, but there really isn't any evidence to place circularity above any other shape.

Flat Earthers accept a circular disk because Gleeson patented a map which was a circular disk. If there is one group of people who are experts at parroting what they have been told, who have really been brainwashed away from the truth by a group with an agenda, they are the members and believer of the Flat Earth Society.

Seriously? Are you still asking that question?

385
There are some points he raised that are truthful. Not the truth, just truthful. The context in which he uses it are what prevent these statements from being true.
The Earth is still flat.

Total bunkum

Yacht race numerical gymnastics are not indicative of Earth shape.  Presenting these representative kips and splits will not get you closer to the truth.

Even more bunkum.

FET has maps(s) that get closer to truth.  It has been stated that if you travel straight on the flat Earth, you will end up right where you started due to the nature of arcing. This makes more sense than all the "we" are living (and having races) on a round ball...and really works if you were to try it.

Truthful. Not the truth, just truthful.
FET has maps that get close to the truth. The truth is the earth isn't flat. So these maps are azimutal projections that are meant to address specific issues. The earth being flat unfortunately is not one of those issues. I watched a video of some guy using flight times and distances between airports to create a map of the flat earth. Fella got stuck when he had to use 2 Australias just to get the distances to work. I think he eventually gave up. The world as we know it is definitely not possible if it were flat.

Also moving "in a straight line" will circumnavigate a flat earth. Mainly because we move with respect to the north pole. Change that to moving with respect to the south pole which is really just as easy. You will either
1. Circumnavigate the earth. Or
2. Crash into the ice wall.

Guess which actually happens. Just guess.

The wind knows of what I speak, not these purported facts and picturesque numbers presented to confuse reality, as we observe it.
Not sure if that's the wind generated by the interactions between a distant sun and a rotating spherical earth or the one coming out of your arse  ;D :D The truth or truthfulness depends on which.

Pfft. Your reality maybe.
Well, put your money where your mouth is and tell us what the elevations of Polaris would be at various latitudes are in your reality!

And look what "the Wiki" and Rowbotham say:
Quote
This considered, we go to Chapter 14, Section 6 of Earth Not a Globe where we read:
Quote
DECLINATION OF THE POLE STAR.

Another phenomenon supposed to prove rotundity, is thought to be the fact that Polaris, or the north polar star sinks to the horizon as the traveler approaches the equator, on passing which it becomes invisible.

I have not seen Polaris. Therefore in my Soloptic universe it does not exist until I see/generate it. Everything and everyone, you included are just figments of my imagination. You exist because I called for it. The moment I log off this forum for good, you will all cease existence and only exist as a memory in me. Too many FEs think that Samuel Rowbotham's 150-year-old experiment over a 10km length of a canal proved the earth's flatness LOL.  Apart from being ridiculously outdated now, his experiment was unsupported due to his total lack of scientific knowledge about his claims.  Instead, we should be reading about Alfred Russel Wallace, a surveyor who actually knew what he was talking about, but who was effectively shut down and ruined by Rowbotham after he, Wallace, proved the water in the canal was in fact curved.  Wallace's experimental setup precluded the known effects of atmospheric refraction at or just above the water's surface, a problem that Rowbotham failed to acknowledge with his own experiment.

The patron saint of flat earthers was wrong? GASP!!
He couldn't properly conduct a scientific experiment? Egad!!
